Muzzleloader sabots in a 12ga?

That def. won't work, way too small dia., and those bullets are not meant for smoothbore, they would not spin even in a rifled barrel. Just buy a properly cast lead slug that fits in a shotshell wad.

I would think that OAL would hamper crimping and the sabot and bullet are designed for a rifled bore and quite long together, u might get away with a .490 ball , but u might be better just get a lee mold or one of the others.
I just got a lee loader and mold for cheap, im about to load a bunch more for shooting tomorrow.

Inside of a shotgun barrel is effectively 68 caliber so a 50 cal sabot with 44 cal bullet wont work... I am presently investigating ways to accomplish what your looking to do with little sucess there is a company in the states that makes the sabot/wads that come in the good slugs but they are discontiuned and they wouldn't export to canada either.

i tried
found some nylon tubing that took up the space between the wad and sabbot with a little sanding on the outside of the tube, the fit was perfect and i couldnt see any problems with it
but it shot about as accurate as throwing a rock
let alone the fact that its expensive

i put up a couple pics on here in "my cheap slug method" and for the price its the cheapest (and go figure most accurate) way I can find to blast off slugs
ive shot off way too many (but i still feel the need to shoot more) slugs ive made with the Lee Slug Mold, at 1oz it would be more than enough for hunting, it takes a lil bit to get used to but it works just as good or better than factory lead slugs, measuring in at 0.68" the lee slugs violently explode 2l bottles

I belive ive shot off every factory slug available in canada, with a rifled barrel HORNADY SST riens supreme in accuracy! no if ands or buts
and at 100yards they only shoot a couple inches higher than a winchester trap shell loaded with a lee slug

Have you actually shot game with them because they were a bit disapointing to me last season... most of my shots with the lee slugs where more then 100 yards probally closer to the 200 yard area and guessing drop on a slow moving slug like that is hard even though I fired over 500 off in practice out to 125 yards. They patern clover three shot groups touching at 25 and 50 yards... if I am using them again they will be in the bush for close shots. They are great for blasting away with your grizzly shotgun.

Can you back up that hornady sst is only a few inches higher because there is no way in my mind that a 300 grain slug going at 2000fps can only be a few inches different then a 444 grain slug going at 1500fps.
Using the same point of aim and scope setting.

SST is in the zone between 100-200 yards where the lee slug falls short... ill be using the sst this year over remingtion and my old standby winchester premier.

I believe that at close ranges, a full dia. 12 ga. slug is going to hit an awful lot harder then a .45 cal. bullet. even a bare 12 Ga. round ball, will hit much harder then the muzzleloading projectile. The 12 ga. slug is near 400 grs and the round ball is over 600 grs.

Very true I have taken alot of deer at close range with the run of the mill 1oz slug but but when you fire 9oz of lead a a large deer and dont log a single hit... well the range was to far for the performance of the slug...

Buckshot its also very effective at close range... that's how we got all our deer last year... stoped trying to make those 200 yard long shots, took the rifled scoped barrels and left them in the truck and put on the smooth bores. Even with those 2000fps slugs 200 yards off hand its a tough shot... The more I get out there any explore long range shooting with my centerfires and practical marksmanship I realize how difficult a 200 yard of hand shot is...on game.

Since hunting season is coming around quickly I have started to practice with my slug gun off hand 100 yards going for a 6x6 gong, when I master that I'll move back till I get to 200 yards... there will be no excuses this year why I cant get one with a slug barrel.

since i was going out to put a couple boxes of rounds through the sks anyways i shot up some paper with some slugs, i guess they are so far off in ballistics that they dont even hit in the same area code

sorry about the distance estimate, from barrel crown to target is 91yards (via another guy at the range who was nice enough to provide his bushnell rangefinder)
top is 2-3/4, hornady sst
bottom is 2-3/4, custom load, lee slug
2x 2-3/4 shells separating the puncture wounds

first and last time i use my left hand on the bench to accuratly place both shots, apparenly i didnt think that through enough

Thanks for the info, I use Lee 1oz slugs for target practice, a friend casts them for me. I was looking for an effective bear defence rd that I could also reload to keep the cost down so I can practice with it as well. Range I am thinking of is no greater than 50yards. It penetration and stopping power I am thinking of in light that I will likely be shooting at a head on target.
