I'm looking to buy my first muzzleloader and im open to suggestions.
Id like to spend about 400 dollars on the gun not including scope ammo etc
Id like to stay away from slide and bolt actions peferably break away
I've got a Remington Genesis. It's not break-action but more of a side rolling block (don't know what the heck to call it). I've got a 1.5-6X scope on it and I'm super happy with it. My wife has a traditions 209 (cost about 160), and it's super accurate and has never once misfired.
I have a NEF, my next one will be a TC Prohunter. Both TC and NEF use american steel and are proofed for appropriate loads. I believe Knight and Green Mountain use american steel as well.
The rest are made in Spain or Turkey, and use Spanish steel and are not proofed to American standards.
I have a TC Omega mines laminate/SS but you can get the blued or camo version for less $. It shoots great easly to clean and I would recommend using Blackhorn Powder & standard 209 primers easy clean up as a regular rifle. Good Luck .

I concur wholeheartedly. Thompson Center Omega Z5. synthetic stock blued barrel. 100 Gr. Blackhorn 209 powder. Hornady XTP 300 Grains and Hornady Black sabots. Shots straight and consistently. Easy cleanup. No corrosion. My only qualm is that the breech plug is difficult to access with a scope installed.
