Purchased this Mossberg MVP Scout .308 as a package, complete with scope and rings, a nice handy and accurate little rifle. But my ideea of a multi-purpose, bolt action, handy scout rifle is to also be able to use the iron sight as a backup, but I do not really want to remove the scope to do so(.ie quick detach). How could this be achieved, considering that the rear aperture sight is so low on the rail and any see thru rings would be useless with this setup and with the scope being as low . Any mount/rings that could allow the use of these low iron sights? I was also considering the Talley Peep Sight but I know nothing about them. Thanks, much appreciated!

As mentioned, the see through rings are about as fudderific as it gets.

I must ask why the opposition to quick detach rings?? Seems the proper way to go. I would never sacrifice cheek weld if I didn’t have to, your just introducing more margin for error. I have Leupold QD rings on my savage scout, they work fine. Plus the gun feels a little handier with no scope on it at all. Also, with a peep sight I can’t help but fee that having a scope hovering over it / trying to see under a scope is going to limit the amount of light that your eye will see through it. It will probably suck to aim like that. Just my thoughts, good luck.

A bit out of left field alternative here, but what about a 45 degree red dot mount? Just forget the irons, and if you mount a small reflex sight you're good to go. If you don't want to worry about batteries, a Trijicon RMR is an (expensive) option, but there are plenty of cheap options for simple reflex sights.

That said, I'd probably go with the see-through ring base. Yeah it's fudderific - but I think it's a good idea that will work for your application most likely. I prefer that idea over the QR scope that you then have to re-zero when you put it back.

If you go for the see-through ring base, you'll need to get your new rings a bit higher than your current rings, because the bottom of your scope's objective bell is lower than the plane of your fibre-optic front sight and rear sight. Which then means you'll probably want an adjustable cheek-riser. Set it higher up for the scope, drop it down for the irons. I'd suggest one from Matthew's Fabrication. I put one on a Savage Accustock, and I am pretty confident that the plastic hollow stock is similar to the MVP.

I agree with Astute Observer that if you do go with the see through rings that an adjustable cheek riser is a good idea. I personally don’t care for the way they look / bulk they add, but I cannot argue their functionality!

Here is mine and I agree with others, get detach rings. Much better cheek weld, looks better as well. Im only gonna need my irons if the scope fails...if it fails, off it goes in 2 secs and im still in the game. My rifle is the MVP Patrol,,,but pretty similar.

Looks good! I believe the Patrol and the Scout are nearly identical, except the top rail is longer in the Scout, while sight radius is shorter on the Patrol as the rear sight is on the barrel and not a peep sight at the back of the rail.

Love this rifle. I have the predator in .308 with a primary arms 1-6 ACSS griffin reticle.its new so haven’t hunted with it yet, but it handles and shoots well. I love that it feeds from all my ar-10 style magazines, with M14 mags it locks open after the last round, but it feeds from everything without issue.
