Hello Folks

I have gone out shooting many times with my 10/22 has maybe 500 rounds through it this winter alone. Im running into problems with my ammunition choices and am kinda confused.

I purchased a few boxes of Remington Yellow Jacket high velocity ammunition to give it a go and have had nothing but problems. Starting with the most concerning of issues that maybe 3/10 rounds in my magazine will be struck by the hammer with nothing happening. That seems way to often to be a small issue. Has this happened to anybody before? It doesnt seem like all of the powder is being burnt either as a large amount is found in front of the gun on the snow.

I have been using Federal bulk ammunition just fine and has yet to hang fire on me once. What seems to be my issue? Cheap ammo works fine and slightly more pricey stuff is garbage.

Any advice will be great.

Brett

I'll play! If you search around on this site and others you'll find the general consensus on .22's is that they are picky about their ammo. I went through...let's see...AE 40+38gr, Fed blue box Game-Shok+Champion, some old Win Wildcat, Win Dynapoint, Win bulk 555, Rem Golden Bullet, Subsonic, Yellow Jacket, Thunderbolt...um...some CCI stuff, SK standard plus...anyway I found that the AE 38gr worked best in mine, with Rem Subsonic a close second, Your Mileage WILL Vary.
Grab a box of whatever you can, wherever you can, and have fun finding out which ammo your rifle likes:)! (And if you want to, when you find "it" run back to the store and get all of the same lot # you can, this does seem to help with consistency.)

That seems like a solid plan, I was curious as to why it would strike the round but wouldnt fire. Thought maybe there was a mechanical issue. I will stick to my Federal 40gr bargain bullets from now on.

Thanks for the reply.

Ammo

My brother and I both have 10/22 actions and neither gun likes any remington ammo. Have had great luck with CCI Blazer, federal bulk and winchester solids. (Blazer being my first choice). We have both had FTF's and FTE's with Remington. In all FTF cases the rim had a normal strong indentation and no bang.

remington ammo is really dirty stuff and misfires are common, like the others suggest just grab a 50 rd. box of every .22lr you can find and have fun finding what it likes.

My SR-22 has yet to fail with Federal bulk 525 rnd ammo or CCI Blazer 550 rnd bulk ammo. The only other one I really tried was Winchester 555 ammo and it sucked! lots of misfires, and a case rupture. Garbage IMO.

I will also not that mine jammed alot during the first 1000 rounds, but from what I hear that's normal. After it was "broken in" it hasn't had a single malfunction. Very happy with my rifle.

switch to dyanpoints or 555s and watch your troubles EVAPORATE- remington is overpriced JUNK with a capital j-

very interresting. my 10/22 loves Federal American Eagle. most consistant stuff. Federal loose 525 bulck packs are another story for my 10/22... For my .22 1911 525 bulk packs work fine. like smelly pete said , .22s are picky.

Too much oil perhap's?

This^^^

Winter temperatures can cause guns to fail with too much oil. The oil gets thick and slows the action and other moving parts (hammer & firing pin) become inhibited. In winter, I usually shoot my guns dry. You may also use teflon based lubes but very sparingly.

On a side note, I have experienced some feeding issues with 10/22's when using truncated ammo (square tips like yellow jackets) in 3rd party mags like BC steel lips etc... When troubleshooting 10/22 issues, always use the factory mags.
