Took my Rem1100 to the range the other day, to confirm it's working and reliable. All went well for the first box. Then, it seemed to “lock up” after a shot fired, so I turned it over to the magazine opening, and it had not ejected/extracted the original shell, and the second shell was still in the magazine tube. We tried cocking the handle, and it was locked up tight, so we decided to take out the fire control, and could then easily disasemble. Then we could see the empty shell could now be removed from the chamber.
Another guy at the range offered to let me use his 870 for fun, so I used the same box, and had failures to extract probably every second shot!!! Remember, same chamber style, same ammo, but it's a pump action, different gun. After about a second or two, I could eject each one. We suspected the particular box of shells was a bad batch, perhaps expanding too much in the chamber, gripping it too hard. This was Winchester Walmart bulk sport packs. So we changed to Federal shells, and they worked perfectly in both shotguns.
Upon close inspection though, my Remington 1100's shell lifter now has a brand new gouge on the righthand side, the “mound” thing. The gouge was not there earlier that morning. I intend to replace the entire lifter assembly, no need to mess with damaged parts. HOWEVER... is there other parts I should inspect or simply replace?
