I been thinking of shortening a Mosin 91/30 for awhile. The problem was getting a front sight and Brass Stacker recently started shipping to Canada again. The Brass Stacker base I ordered should have been closer to the barrel tip but not all barrels are cut to same diameter. Cut the barrel to 21 inches and after squaring it end up at 20 7/8. Refinished the stock with many coats of dark garnet shellac. The original metal ends were too small so I fashioned some brass for the ends. Problem: Cut the Cleaning rod down to 17.5" and re thread to 8/32 which may not thread into the Mosin 5/32 thread, just order an original M38 /44 cleaning rod or it really doesn't need one.

Cut the cleaning rod to 18" instead of the 17.5". Threaded to 8/32 and it screwed into the original 5/32 (Whitworth ?), nut in the stock. Hardest part was figuring out a way of reducing the diameter of the rod accurately for threading without a lathe.
