Well finally the "stars all lined up" and I was able to get away for the last week of deer in region-8 (BC). Between health issues and work schedules 2012-2013 were rightoff's. This season wasn't looking any better, but I finally had a window of opportunity and headed east (everywhere is "east" of Vancouver Island). An old friend invited me to his property in the Creighton Valley area near Lumby,BC. On the second day after just 20 minutes in the stand this guy wandered out from the far treeline. I was carrying my new Winchester 75th Anniversary .30-06 for the very first time. At 125 yards quartering towards me I sent a 165gr. Hornady his way. To my delight he dropped as if "struck by lightning" (love it when that happens).
Again it had been a couple of rough years so when I reached him I thanked him out loud, all the hunting God's, the Creator, my forefathers, family and anyone else that I could think of!! Though no "record breaker", this old 5X4 sure means alot to me. Man I love this rifle. First shot on game with it!
I'm very happy.
Cheers

Nice buck, congrats! That was that a little earlier in the season I assume or is there no snow in that area yet?

We'd had a skiff of snow a couple days earlier, but turned to rain. About 5c during day and freezing at night. I'm used to much colder for late season, but my friend said they are "gentlemen bucks" on his property that prefer to come out when its nice. I think he's right.

We had such a warm spell here in Manitoba durring deer season about four years ago but at the start of the season, took a nice 5X5 even tho it was +5c-+7c outside. Got to love those gentlemen bucks! :)

Back in the mid-90's we used to head to the Virden,Manitoba area after Ontario closed. Usually really cold, but a couple years we were in shirts.Took some great bucks there until about 1996-97 when winter-kill all, but wiped out everything. Nice story and very nice buck! I really like the 165 hornady bullets on deer, the interlock anyway. Very rare a deer has taken more than a few steps after one of them was placed in the right spot!

Thanks for sharing your story!

Well done Geoff. Nice deer. Great way to christen your new Model 70.
Somehow even a short hunting trip can recharge ones batteries. Always a treat to get out in the field, regardless whether I pull the trigger or not.

I find "sitting on stand" are the most peaceful hours a person can have. Seeing game wether you take it or not is secondary to me. Only 9 months to go until hunting season opens again....
Cheers
Geoff
