My 8mm Rem mag and 7mm Rem Mag

So, despite weather that could have been more pleasant. [cool and quite windy] I couldn't stand it any more.

Had to get my two later rifles out to see what gives. 7mm loaded with 160 AB's and Norma MRP

8mm loaded with 200 AB's and IMR7977; 220 Hornadys with H1000.

Everything shot 1¼moa or less, even lower speed loads. Ended up with a great 7mm load. [66.0 grains of MRP/160 AB/3050fps]

Still working on the 8mm, accuracy there, just believe that a bit more velocity is available yet.
200 AB and 84.0 grains of IMR 7977 yielded just shy of 3000, with no excess pressure signs. Will try H1000 and Reloder 25/26 next.

220 Hornady and 86.0 grains of H1000 at 2990...this is looking promising, to be sure.

Still want to try Reloder 25/26, and Retumbo with this bullet.

Recoil is there, but far from debilitating. Cheers, Dave.

Please post future results on the 8mm Mag, I have liked that one since I was young. I had good luck with the 200's in both the 8mm Mag and the 325 for both accuracy and velocity.

A little off topic , sorry. I have some RL26,7828,Retumbo , I've done some testing with the Retumbo and7828 and will try the RL26 next. I'm using Barnes TTSX 150 g andSST 154g. I'm going to order some more 7MM bullits and was wondering if heavier bullits might be a better choice for these powers? I'm hoping to find one powder/ bullit combo that's accurate... Thanks for any info.

After owning a number of 7mm Mag rifles, I am convinced that they are at the pinnacle of their performance with 160/162/165 grain bullets.
You should be able to make that IMR 7828 work well.

Some mess with the COL but if using a cannelure bullet, I tend to load to the cannelure and then ladder test various powders and charges. With Interbonds or Accubonds or Partitions (non-cannelure), when I hit on a promising load, I will adjust the COL in both directions and test to see if there is an improvement. Consistently under MOA (when I know my form was good), is what I am looking for... not one or two groups out of ten.

So far I've got Barnes 150 TTSX 7828 60.5 g 0.550 . 68.7g 103.9. /Barnes 150 TTSX, Retumbo 68 g, 0.921, 71g 0.789. All 5 rnd groups. Do you guys use a specific brass?. Again, sorry if I'm hijacking your thread.

Not a problem. Right now I am using R-P brass. It is the only brass available for the 8mm Mag, unless you want to pay in gold, lol

I also have a fair bit of R-P brass for the 7mm Mag, so it is getting used right now. In reality, I have been using WW brass for the 7mm in the past.

Sounds to me like your short a 6mm Remington?

R-P brass tends to be thicker (and tougher), but because it is thicker it also usually has less capacity than Win brass... I don't think it matters much which you use as long as it is all the same... but you can't assume that all brass will be the same even within a brand... after full length sizing a hundred pieces of R-P brass the other day, from two lots, I noticed that the same payload filled to the bottom of the neck on one and to the middle of the neck on the other... it was freaking me out, so I kept re-weighing the charges and dumping cases back into the pan to double check... I would normally sort that brass but I decided to use it all in groups of five rounds, one being a compressed load (but the same charge), just to see what, if any, difference there would be on paper.

I usually use 160's in my 7 mags (Rem, Wby, STW). Nice combination of bullet weight and speed. In the 8 I use 220's and 250's. I tend to like heavier bullets. - dan

You should be able to make that IMR 7828 work well.

Likewise, I've owned a number of 7mm mags -- 3 in Remington and 1 in a Weatherby. I'm convinced they are at their best with 175 gr bullets, in particular the Nosler Partition.

The 3 Remingtons were: a BAR with a 24" barrel, a Ruger No.1 with a 26" and an M700 BDL with a 24". The BAR gave over 2900 fps, the Ruger 3000 fps and the BDL, 2950 fps. The 24" Weatherby gave 3015 fps, all with excellent accuracy. The 175 Nosler at those MV's is right up there with .300 mags at longer ranges with an SD of .310 and BC of .519. The powder was always RL-22.

Just the facts -- a 160 - 165 can't keep pace at close range or long range.

Not really. I have 3 of those 6mm Remingtons. A flat-bolt Ruger 77, a 700 Classic, and a custom 700 HB. Dave.

The 160 AB has a better BC than the 175 Partition, meaning it retains energy better than the 175. That's the facts. 175 Partition vs 160 AB, well there is a whole subjective debate there, but the only fact is the the 160 AB retains more energy than a 175 Partition.

How did the Bar do? I have owned/and still do....several, and always tried to load pretty vanilla for the semi.
