If there is anyone out there like me who thought that building a solid 9MM AR was a mystery, I thought I would post this. Where do I get the parts, availability, fit, etc were all questions I had. I looked at a couple of used and new ones and the price seemed high for what you were getting. Having just finished a build on a custom AR for 3 gun I realized that the only way to get what I wanted would be to build one. Now keep in mind my goal wasn't to build the cheapest one on the block, but one that would run great and be a pleasure to shoot. Took it out last night for the first run and was very happy. Took about 50 shots through to loosen it up a bit as the extractor was keeping the empty brass captive causing jams. After that ran flawless. Mags still need a bit of loosening as it is tough to get ten rounds in without breaking a sweat. Without even moving the zero settings on the Sparc from when I pulled it off my Thureon that I sold, I had no trouble ringing the steel out to 100 yards. Last shot locks bolt open every time and gun shoots great. The upper and lower fit together perfectly and look like they were made for each other. Now I am sure some of you will chime in and say why restricted for more money when there are lots of non-restricted options out there. I prefer the look and feel of a true AR 9mm and all of my shooting is at ranges anyway so makes it a non-issue for me

Parts list

Lower - Spikes lower off the EE (thanks xeelee) in new condition. Had a lot of Spikes and Magpul parts, saving some money of putting them together individually $500
Upper - 10" Palmetto State Armoury from IrunGuns US. $650 all said and done shipped to me. Included 9MM BCG and charge handle
Colt 9mm mag adapter - also from EE, $75 shipped
POF 3.5 pound single stage trigger - $200 from a guy at my club new in box. Also came with an extra set of KNS pins for another build
Colt 10 round pistol mags - Questar - $30 each
9MM buffer - Questar $35 - Lower had a Spikes heavy buffer than I will also save for the next build
Vortex Sparc red dot - free as I kept this when I sold my Thureon Defense

Looks good.

I built my own as well. At the time (2004) there was virtually no one bringing in 9mm stuff. It all started with a barrel I found in the EE and quickly snowballed from there. Wasn't the cheapest project, people wanted $200 for Colt 9mm mags and there were no other options back then.

I can notice a HUGE surge in gun ownership and available product since I first joined CGN in 2007.

I think I would be so out of my league my head would spin right off if I tried to build up my own. It's all so confusing when coming from a traditional hunting gun background for me. I think I'll just pick up a JR for cheap or something and see how everything fits together and go from there.

I don't really understand how to know which parts will fit on which other parts :/ and non of the lingo really bumps over from anything I know about any of my bolt action guns. I think once I had one in hand I would understand a little more.

No Voodoo , way easier then you think for the basic stuff , then it gets to be like Heroin .

Nice

I was lucky and got one of the factory colt RO634's 9mm smg's that made it into Canada many years ago my kids love shooting it

I love my 9mm AR, I enjoy shooting as much as any of my other AR's and it's the one I let new shooters try and they all turn to me with a huge smile and ask for another magazine.

I just started a thread on whether or not to trade my CZ New Editon for a Rock River Arms AR in 9mm. I have always wanted an AR, handload 9mm like it's going out of style and do all my shooting at the range 5 minutes down the road... As long as it's a good gun, I think I'll go for it!

Ps... That is a beautiful build!

You'll love it.
If you can keep up to it's appetite it'll become your favorite rifle. I hardly ever clean mine and it just keeps eating my handloads.
