Just traded my mini 14 for a mossberg mvp patrol. 16.25 " barrel, 1/9 twist. ( My new calling rig)
Decided i wanted accurate over high volume of fire.....
Anyways......wanted to reload the AE shells so i bought 55 gr nosler varmagedon and 50 gr speer tnt hp.
Though i wanted some h 335 or varget, the only powder Cabelas had on hand was imr 4064.
Managed to find recipes for 55 gr v-max, and the Lyman book had a recipe for the 50's
Decided to load 20 of each bullet with 25 gr of the powder for both bullets. havent shot any yet. just wondering if any of the old dogs have any premenitions.

I bet 4064 will flop. Youll want a faster powder with your 16" barrel
Benchmark, cfe223, imr/H 4198

Benchmark is fantastic for 223
Good success with 4198 in a savage axis too.

CFE is the cats ass for me in my VZ 58 Sporter using 55gn vmax bullets. I've had decent results with 4198 as well. Not sure if I'll be able to try my loads out on any canines this year but I'll see if I can't get a bait pile out this weekend that is if I get some beaver carcasses to put out. Good luck with your yote load Dogslayer.

I've used 4064 in my 243 and it killed em pretty good. Seeing as how I can't return the powder to cabelas( even though the sales rep suggested it over 4895........ Might as well just shoot it till its gone. Might not be the fastest but I'm sure or at least hope it'll do the job within 300 yes?! I'll b sure to do a range report

You might be able to hit 2800 fps with 4064/55gr in a 16" tube. Won't be flashy but I wouldn't want to be a coyote inside 250 yards

I really like the 55gr Varmageddon tipped, great accuracy for the price, I shot a lynx with one last winter from my 223 @ 3250 fps. Was a bit ugly

AA2230 is my favorite. Seems to give me better accuracy and velocity than H335. I'm pushing 3300 fps with 55gr Vmax for gophers. Granted I have a longer barrel (almost 24"), but I suspect they will blow up coyotes as well... as long as I don't want to keep the pelt. But hey - ZERO chance of an exit wound! ;)

Unfortunately you do not have any but like a few mentioned if you can ever find Benchmark. It is one of my favorite 223 powders along with, LT-32, AA2015, VV 133, and one of my BR blends that I have blended up.

It also is nice if you can settle on rifle calibers that can use similar powders. All the above mentioned powders can or are used in my 6PPC's. This way I will NEVER be short of powder for my main rifles.

I've never tried 4064 in 223, I've always heard it was best in 308, if I remember correctly it's the powder used in FGMM.
CFE223 and IMR4198 have worked well for me. Varget works well for my buddy with his MVP.
223 seems to work with a lot of different powders. Only way to know if it will work with your rifle and bullet choice is to try it. You'll need to do some load development though, it probably isn't going to work for the first load you try.

Good luck

My best .223 load is currently 55 VM's with 27.5 grains of CFE-223 @ 2.750", but Varget and W748 work well also. In my No.1-A .223, I use 60 Partitions with 26.0 grains of W748 and an over length COL of 2.350".
