Went out to get a 10/22. Here it is

Romanian surplus (supposedly non-corrosive) on sale for $200ish a case of 1320 too

Sorry for the crappy cell phone camera pic, but there will be plenty of better quality images once I get around to cleaning her up and especially when I start making a few minor alterations ;)

Id like to know where that is also. Im going to be in TO this week and would be willing to go and pick some up for nearly a $100 savings over where I'm getting it now. I doubt its non corrosive though.

Sarcasm?

Where you buy the ammo from? $200 for non-corrosive sounds like an awesome deal!
Yes it was sarcasm.. I really went to get a 10/22 so my wife's more comfortable with shooting it, too.. They only had the compact version, $180 was a very good price for a Russian that I can take to ranges south of the border and the Romanian ammo clinched it for me. Le Baron.. $206.94

Baking soda baths???

Why spend your money on baking soda when boiling hot water does the trick??
All i use is boiled watet then clean normally. I have never had a problem wih rust in any of my guns

Baking soda is dirt cheap and it will neutralize any remaining acid in conjunction with hot water, but thanks for the tip.

The corrosion from ammo is not caused by acid. It is caused by potassium chloride residue that is left behind.

Potassium chloride is soluable in water. Therefore, water is the best thing for removing it.

It is also hygroscopic, meaning it will attract moisture out of the atmosphere. The combination of moisture, oxygen, and potassium chloride salt causes rust.

It's not a reaction with acid...

Thanks for the correction. It was something I got from an experienced shooter friend and his take on corrosive ammo. I'll accept experience and science over experience alone and am more than willing to change my mind when logic dictates it.

Excellent choice! My info comes from a chemist. According to her, there is no scientific basis for using Windex, baking soda, or any other internet concoctions for removing the corrosive salts left from ammo.

Water is the best. Hot water is better than cold water. Potassium Chloride is highly soluable in water, just like table salt, and will wash away easily. Once you've eliminated the KCl, it's no different than if you were using non-corrosive ammo. Further cleaning with standard cleaning products, like bore solvent, is all you need. Follow up with gun oil to form a protective layer.

Oh, and by the way, very nice looking gun! What's the cosmoline situation?

Pretty bad.. Was planning a full disassembly anyway, so I'm not too worried. I'll get her squeeky clean and lightly oiled.

It's more like a 5/7.62 but I know what you are trying to say

I blame it on Le Baron.. They had to sell Russian SKS' for $180 and Romanian ammo for $200.. How's a sane man supposed to resist that? :(

Russian and Chinese SKSs are not importable to the United States and haven't been since Soviet milsurp arms imports were banned in '88-'89.

Thanks for the heads up. I thought it was only the Chinese due to Norc reps selling to gangbangers. Still, I got a good rifle/ammo combo for a great price, so you won't see me tearing out my chest hair :)

Thank you :) Didn't get around to cleaning her out yet.. The Mrs. got me on her IKEA assembly line project late into the night.. Fortunately we're well insulated or the neighbors would have formed a lynch mob due to the sound of my little 12V impact driver ;) Hoping for tonight.. In the garage.. Got plenty of Kerosene and some carb cleaner lying around, so I should be set.. Already got CLP.
