My brother is looking for good bang for buck, let me know what you think!?

So I got my brother convinced (finally) to buy a couple pistols and a Black rifle.. but he is living off one income family kinda deal. But I am not the best for recommending cheap but good guns, as I usually buy semi-customs or better. Obviously he's gotta go try a few, but I am wondering which we can try as obvious ones we should be looking at as contenders.

wants a good quality .22 pistol, I suggested to him a Mark IV Ruger, they are reasonably priced, easy to take down and use, been around forever, so I think that one is figured out.

As far as other pistol, He is looking for:
- #1 high reliability
- cheap ammo (so it's gonna be 9mm for sure)
- fairly ambi friendly
- under around $1000 give or take(cheaper the better, without sacrificing quality)

I'm thinking a Glock 17 or some sort, even though I dislike them, others? Don't know how good the HK's, walthers and other ambi guns are?

As far as a black gun, it's tough, he doesn't want the mess of cleaning all the time with surpluss ammo, so no vz.58 and the likes. So it looks like it will be .556, he would spend a bit more here maybe around $1500, having it NR sounds nice too, but not a must.
Not really keen on the unproven guns that have fan clubs, like the WK-180

He would also consider used guns, but really can't afford to get ripped off, he's also one of those really honest guys that seems to get the short end of the stick most of the time when buying used, so he's a bit hesitant.

Any logical suggestions would be great!

well if cost is an issue, Glock over HK, especially if you are thinking about accessories...HK mags sure are more expensive than Glock mags (and fewer aftermarket options)

as for an "economical" AR, the S&W M&P has a great reputation.

22 pistol I would recommend a Ruger Mk anything or a Browning Buckmark. I own both and they are dead nuts reliable ! Find the one that fits him best. The rest of the .22 pistols are just so so or horrible in terms on reliability .

Non .22 pistol he needs to ultimately find something that fits him. While I am strong advocate of Glock ( I own 15 of them) , He needs something that works for him. As far as a range toy just about anything will be reliable if you stick to top manufacturers. Maybe also take a look at a Jericho . They shoot like a laser and are a cheaper alternative compared to a shadow 2. He might also want to look at an M&P or a nice used 9mm 1911.

For an "economical" black rifle I would agree with RL1, The S&W M&P is probably the best bang for the buck on the market right now.

The .22 pistol: Ruger Mk.4, sure. Or Mk.3 or Mk.2. When someone makes a better version of something the earlier version(s) don't get worse. They often get cheaper in the second hand market but they still work as well as they did. You should be able to guard against him getting ripped off.

A piston in 9mm: Norinco makes good working copies of some great designs. They aren't expensive, and they work well, they just aren't finished as nicely.

For the "black" rifle, as RL1 said. If he wants to avoid the restricted class, Ruger Mini-14.

Get a P10C right now!! This is NOT a cheap handgun and is rightly currently considered one of THE best triggers in a striker fired pistol. Maybe the best. I got a P-09 for 599..... and a Vector..... so I’m tapped.... but this is next.

You as well as he will shoot a P10 and wonder why you considered a Glock. And I’m a Glock fanboy, who may soon realize I’m a CZ fanboy now. Anyway at that price, you’ll be able to sell it for 100 more in a month.

Nothing wrong with used guns, just know what you are buying... you can find hardly used guns for decent price on the EE here on the site and if you get ripped off you can give the seller a bad review...no body wants to have a bad review on their account...

.22 pistol I’d say you nailed 100%. I don’t have one myself but it’s the only .22 pistol I’ve ever come across that’s both reliable and accurate where as most others guys use the typical claim of “ahhh it’s just the ammo” meanwhile the rugers seem to chew through everything.

Pistol, Glock 17 enough said. Find a used Glock 17 for 500 bucks on the EE and he’s set for life. Any other answer is just foolish as a Glock will outlive any other handgun, it’ll shoot just as good and it has more readily available replacement parts and servicing glocks is so easy, the only requirement at Glock armorers school is a pulse.

As for a rifle, get an AR15 and be done with it. It’s the only truly reliable platform that can be had for his budget unless you secretly hate him in which case feel free to recommend a mini 14. Again, hit the EE and find something factory built (not frankengun) and he’s good to go. Pretty sure you can find colt AR’s for within his budget. Or as others have mentioned, get a S&W m&p15 for 600-700 bucks, slap an aimpoint on it and he’s got a perfectly serviceable rifle.

Unless you are a gun snob; Norinco NP19, NZ85B or NP22 would all be great beginner 9mm guns. I have all three, and the NZ85 is the best fit for me; the NP19 is fun, but is likely going down the road as I have a Norinco 1911 in 45 I really enjoy shooting. Any of these used should be around $300.00; maybe a bit more for the NZ85. new $360-400 +tax. The Sig clones have the nicest finish; but their triggers are ok, but not really great.

S & W AR15s are great value; the Norinco CQAs have better barrels though. I would avoid Mini-14s; too much money for mediocre accuracy at best. Do what I did, and build an AR; should be able to build something really nice for < $1000.00 I have about $700 in mine and it shoots sub MOA with my home loads at 100 yards. (4" groups with American Eagle garbage ammo).

Rugers are OK; I don't shoot well with them. My choice would would be 1. a good used Hi Standard, 2. A Browning Buck-mark

Bang for the buck I would recommend,

.22- Ruger Mark 11, 111 or 1V- target barrel (proven and good resale)

9mm- Ruger American Pistol ($700 new) lots of u tube reviews, great pistol for the money

Skip the restricted headaches and get a Mini 14, lots of aftermarket goodies and stocks for the black gun look. (also proven and good resale)

I agree with your WK comment

I have lots of pistols. And I am always a bang for the buck kinda guy.

22 is a Ruger.

9mm is a Canik. A well laid out pistol, ambi friendly and excellent sights and trigger. The latter two features make a pistol.

A shadow can be had for under 800 on sale, great pistol. Colt le6920 can be had for under 1500 on sale. Mine has thousands of rounds through her, with only one stoppage that was my fault, my chamber got packed full of mud on a course.

Instead of 556, go 9mm on rifle. Cheaper overall ammo outlay.

Select pistol first, then rifle using same mags. Cheaper overall outlay again.

Like Baretta CX4 and pistol, or something using glock mags.

To play in bigger leagues, loan him a gun. You’re the brother, and a bigger budget than he does. He buys ammo, of course.

I was going to suggest the same 2 guns...
Tradex has a decent used MkII, that was the peak of the design.

$650 you get a lot of pistol.

Like others have mentioned....Ruger MKI-IV and G17's are worth looking into. Should be able to find them in the EE for <1,000.00 (for both) from reputable Sellers.
I own both HG's and they are easy to take down/clean and parts (if needed) are everywhere, inexpensive to buy and mostly no-Smith required. Neither need to be babied either!
My choice in a black rifle would be a scoped bolt-action.....ymmv.

Thanks guys, lots of good options here. never heard of a Canik before, will look it up.

He also just told me he wants a shotgun too, something with a medium sized barrel, that I'm sure I can find easy enough for him.

Or if you want to stay with one manufacturer, go with a Smith & Wesson M&P 9 M2.0 and the M&P 15 Sport II, both excellent value for money.

And a site sponsor Select Shooting Supplies has this Boxing Day sale, Buy M&P AR get $100 off M&P 9 2.0 (only $499).
