1. What's the practical difference between 10mm and .40 cal and

2. What applications would you use each one for rather than using more readily available and cheaper 9mm or going to the more expensive but more readily available .45 loaded down a bit for competitive shooting?

1. 10mm has quite a bit more punch than the 40SW. Uses the same bullets, but the 10mm will do a 180 grain JHP at 1400 FPS all day long.

2. 10mm is nice if you reload and have brass for it. 40SW is nice because it can be downloaded into a near 9mm load and brass is generally free (police departments). 45 brass will last forever, usually 15 loading wheras the 10mm is not blesses with that trait. Personally, I would use 9mm as it is dirt cheap and the paper targets do not notice the difference.

10mm is a good bear banging round if you have an ATC, esp. with the hot Norma loads.

The 10mm case is longer than 40 S&W, this means it can only be chambered in large frame pistols. The 40 S&W was designed to give similar ballistics to the 45 ACP but be short enough that it could fit in small frame (9mm sized) pistols.

.40S&W is like a 10mm short. IIRC it came about after the FBI change to the 10mm some time after the Miami shot out in 86??? they warn't happy with the 9mm and .38spc they where using change to the 10mm ,down loaded so it was a bit more controlable for most of their agents.And S&W started making the it in a shorter case= .40 S&W.thats the short version.
