I picked up a Cooey Ranger at the Saskatoon gun show and decided I was going to Re-finish the stock.
When I picked it up it had a fair amount of rust but I got it quite cheap and just wanted an older 22 to keep in my truck.
After firing it I kinda fell in love with this thing.
Here is the original product(Sorry about pics but it was originally just for myself to see the difference);

I decided originally I was just going to Re-Finish the stock so I picked up some sand paper/stain/poly/steel wool.

After sanding, steaming nicks and dings I applied 4 coats of stain and sanded in between.
Then 2 coats of poly with steel wool after the first coat.

I was really happy with the wood I uncovered and love the stripe down the center of the stock.

I decided it needed one more poly so I rubbed it down with steel wool and hit it again(all thinnest coats possible)

I also took the 800 grit and removed some rust. This started me down a whole new road.

Rust Removed

After cleaning up some rust the old fella next store said I could have some cold blue he had just purchased for a touch up.
I instantly cleaned the butt plate with vinegar(wow) sanded, and then rubbed down with steel wool.
After degreasing and applying the blue this was what I got;

I then followed the deblueing process above and stripped the entire rifle, and scope down to bare metal.

I got the first coat of blue on last night and am happy but need more brake cleaner to do another coat. When I get it completed I will share the finished product. It is by no means factory new but it should have a longer life then it would of and I now have a 22 just like my grampa used to shoot when I was a kid.
This one is coming to the grave!

Here is how I removed blueing

After about 20mins most of it rubs off. I then sanded with 100/200/1000

One coat of blue on scope, barrel still sanded

After several coats of blue I realized that the steel wool is really important in this process.
It took a lot of light polishing before it blended together and got a nice shine to it.
I am very happy with the final process.

All that's left is a blast with air gun and good cleaning.

Here is how it sits now

If your wondering why I moved outside well, the wife got home so there was no more wildtv and working in the living room.
Although she was amazed it was the same gun.

Nothing special here but pretty happy with the job I got done.

Now I need another project.

Nice that it's scoped. The code rangers I have are 1 single that was redone with cold blue and 1 ranger 60 that was done with cold blue. Both turned out great. The 60 is a blast to shoot. The single not so much. They were my father in laws dad's and Gramps guns been around a long time. As he is 65.
