So, I finally got around to making an 870 with 12.5" barrel.
It's been a long journey... and it isn't over yet, but here is it:

-Originally a Remington 18" 870 Express Magnum - (Cert. says 470mm or less)
-Dlask 12.5" barrel with choke (I'm using an improved cylinder)
-Hogue 12" stock (hey, I am building a shorty, might as well go all out!)
-Armacoat BLACK on Receiver-Tube, Dlask Barrel and Fore end tube assembly.
-S&J single point sling mount.

In doing this build I wanted to paint behind the latches and managed to bugger up the latches in removal - I now sometimes get double feeds which sucks so I have already ordered new replacement latches; I don't regret doing this as there was surface rust starting behind them :p

Now for the pics... sorry for the low quality - I took them at night and pics at night always suck (best to use sunshine when you can):

Just came back from painting parts:

You can see the new Armacoat black (looks good):

I paid for the Choke option!

Here she is... 31" Overall Length - It's a tight little package:

Wish me luck! I am off to shoot some trap this morning :) :dancingbanana:

That "armacoat" looks good.

What about the 12" stock? Can you use the gun with that?
I had one of these, and I found it awfully short.
So short that it brings the sight(s) too close to the eye.
I exchanged it for the 14" one.

Post your findings after trap shooting:D

Aren't the 12 inch stocks design for military or law enforcement wearing ballistic vests. They had to remove from the stocks because of the bulkiness of the vest.

...or they're for youths and women :D
(actually I thought it'd be a great shotgun for my wife if she ever wanted to try and shoot it).

The front sight for me isn't hard to see at all... for me the only problem is that it's uncomfortable to keep the finger off the trigger when the shotgun is shouldered (my wrist is torqued up in a very uncomfortable position).
Otherwise it's not bad. I wanted compact and I can't get a folder or pistol grip. I could get a knoxx, but, I'll try this out for now (I still might get the knoxx).

I am leaving in 15mins for Trap - that'll be the test I suppose :D

Don't take too many shotgun rounds or pigeons with you, you'll know what I mean when you'll feel the recoil:D

Also, take along a 22 or something more shootable, so you can actualy have a nice day at the range:D

You were not kidding!!!

After the first shot I thought I had accidentally loaded a slug ...LOL! With the short stock I also managed to make some painful contact between my cheek bone and thumb bone on more than one occasion. I honestly can't imagine shooting anything 3" in this thing; I don't think I will ever shoot a slug (well maybe 5 just to make sure they work).

It was funny because I wasn't worried so about hitting the clays as I was of avoiding / adapting to the recoil. BTW I blasted through 100 shells. So, I guess that was the bad news.

The good news is I managed to hit 1 clay just before it hit the ground "way out there." I really wanted to make one of those long shots so I knew the choke was working.

The 12.5" barrel also produces muzzle flash with trap loads. I thought that was pretty cool as I am a big fan of muzzle flash; another young guy on the line made a comment like "That gun is so bad ass it even spits fire". I think a lot of people got a kick out of seeing it.

All in all, everything worked great... but I have no idea on how it patterns. I wish I had done that first (gone to the range for some target practice on paper). I don't know where the front sight needs to be in relation to what I am shooting at. My trap scores were the lowest they'd ever been, but it was definitely operator error. I was hitting ones I thought I Missed, and missing ones I thought I hit.

Anyway, this week I hope to do some regular range "pattern" shooting and then I will hit the clays again next weekend :D

The stock is neutral for me right now; not sure if I like or dislike it; it took some getting used to and it seems to be working now... but I keep thinking that I should maybe invest in the Knoxx Stock afterall to tame the recoil.

:D

Yeah, welcome to the club.

One day we may arrange some shooting together and I will let you put my 18 rnds drum on your 870 so you can give it a try in rapid fire to see how many you can discharge before claiming a coffee break.

Nice shorty! I do like the look of your armacoat finish. Welcome to the 12.5 club. We need a poll on what ammo produces the biggest muzzle flash. That would be great fun at the range to light of a few flames!Lol

Looks great! very business-like
A lot of perceived recoil can be lessened by good solid hold on the gun, make sure it is tucked really solidly into the shoulder and don't jam your face into the stock, and try sliding your thumb to the outside of the stock a bit more. It works well if you bring the gun to your face to line up the sights and then into your shoulder rather than shouldering it and trying to bring your face to the stock trying to find the sights after. I like the shorter rear stocks and shorten mine at least 1-1.5" , I am 5'11" and 200 lb. I do have to be careful about placing my rear hand thumb alongside the stock and not gripping around if I don't want to knock my nose. Recoil with slugs is increased but not that much, partially because of the heavy weight of the Dlask barrel.
here's a video shooting the short 12.5" barrel

BTW: My avatar is the same 12.5" setup, if I miss the charging bear at least I'll barbeque it ;)

If you didn't have a barrel threaded for chokes, I would have suggested taking it back to Dlask (if they are still in business) and ask for porting. It does make the recoil more manageable.

Good to know - I might ask if it is possible to still do it :)

On another note, Setanta here on CGN went out with me today (he had his 870 Marine Magnum) and snapped a photo of the shotguns.

EnjoY!

Nice 870. I am looking at building almost the exact same thing right now. Might go 14" though. PM me if you have any suggestions on my build, having built one yourself?

It doesn't surprise me you only hit one clay in trap, but you should really give that puppy a try on skeet; I tried a 14" Valtro PM5 on skeet once, and it was fantastic.

Hey, I'm not that bad :p the one clay was really far out and I hit it (all others that were far out I missed).

In past I'd average 20 clays a game... today though my average was more like 12 :)
I'm definitely going to get some practice in before going out next time.

I've got a knoxx compstock I'm looking at selling. It's basically the hogue stock but standard length of pull and the recoil system inside. You still get the hogue overmolding plus the soft hogue recoil pad. Shoot me a pm if interested.

It's currently mounted on an 870 I'm selling but I'd be willing to break up the package. I love shooting with it, the reason for selling is that I'm looking to buy a marlin lever gun. It tames recoil enough that the wife was able to shoot with it.
