As the title states, my father claims to have read an article on a "tourist" hunt. The point of the hunt was that the hunting guests (possibly together with a guide) went by canoe through the hunting grounds and by that mean stalked black bear that was near the water for fishing and drinking.

Do you know of anyone that organizes this kind of hunts? Or any other canadian hunting firm that welcomes international "clients"?

We usually stalk deer, moose and hog on our own grounds but divercity and new experiences are the spices of life.

your dad's dream is very possible. were are u from ? Im sure there are people who can help u pic a guide on here better than I but you should google some and give them a call !

Good luck man

A good posting. I congratulate your Dad on wanting a new hunting adventure.
I will guess you are from Norway!
If that is right, there were so many of your country men that settled in our remotest areas and were a great asset to the country.
I am not a bit familiar with Ontario, but I would guess that would be your best area for hunting bears from the rivers.
In BC some of our lower coastal streams would be great, but oh dear! No hunting areas, protected areas, no bear hunting areas, Loads of environmentalists, demonstrators against bear hunters, anti hunters and charter members of the PETA group(s), and what is that other huge group that doesn't want us there?

Hunting bear from a canoe would be more difficult than the usual techniques. I have encountered bears on a canoe trips so it is possible.

Here is a guide search tool for Manitoba, which has 100,000 lakes and some bears too!

Close! We're Swedes!

Yeuwhck :(. Over here those people never leave the capitol and thus us sensible folks got the forests for ourselves.

I think the reason my dad is so into the canoing part is that he used to canoe a lot as a kid. I don't think it's a must, it might just be in the dream to represent the independence of the hunter (guest). While I'm sure there are a lot of skilled guides who make hunting trips of this kind unforgettable experiences, if he's in charge of his own canoe, he'll get to be 100% hunter, not just 100% shot.

Perhaps the dream is a little too detailed to be fulfilled in the best way, I'll check out that guide finder and see if I come up with something he might be interested in. Dad is much more a hunter than a forum/google browser, you see. Any names of guides or companies with canoe-based hunting are appreciated.

Thank you all for your replies!

I almost flipped a coin, to decide to say Norway, or Sweden. In any case, what I said about Norwegians settling our frontiers applies equally to Swedes. In long years past I have had good friends from both countries.
Don't give up yet on the canoe hunt. There are a lot of bears in BC, as has been mentioned. There are also a lot of good rivers. My only problem is it has been so many years since I was familiar with the northern rivers. The rivers haven't changed, but the habitat they flow through, certainly has.
I'm thinking of the Nation River, and the Parsnip River. Both of these are easy access, yet still must go through more or less unsettled country, for somewhat of a wilderness experience. I would say spring, to get away from all the moose hunters in a fall hunt.
If a wilderness hunt was most desired, I would say a trip down the Swanell, in northern BC, would win, hands down.
I think there is a member of CGN on here who guides on the Bowron (Bear River.) Where are you Amphibious?
And Drache, there are lots of bears in your area, as well as some rivers, albiet some not too good for canoe hunting. What do you say?
I would contact the Game Branch of the Dept. of Environment in BC.
Let them know which had priority, a wilderness trip, or a bear, and who guided where.

I went out on a canoe trip/bear hunting trip last week. It was mostly a canoe trip, but I had my bear tag and my rifle in case I saw one. No luck.

I canoe trip several hundred kilometers a year in Northern Ontario. I see bears each year, but most of them are along the road or in town. I have seen a few on portages and a couple swimming in the water in front of me, none of which would have been suitable to shoot.

However, if the criteria could be adjusted, so that your dad canoes to a spot to that is baited, the hunt would be a success up here. There are many portages that I know of where this is already going on...you can canoe to it, shoot your bear and then canoe back with him. I know an outfitter who might be willing to set something like that up.

Do black bears actually fish?

I have done alot of salmon and trout fishing along the N Shore of Superior and I have never seen a Black Bear. I always thought of them as berry eaters, and bread, donuts, kibble, grease and what ever you put in your bear bait

Canadian moose hunt by canoe would be quite practical and probably give you more chance of success. You might be able to call one in to shore. That's an adventure I've thought of trying here in Manitoba.

Here you go!

Give them a try! maybe they can do what your dad wants?

I have shoot several moose from a canoe as well as elk in northern British Columbia during on a fly-in hunt. Never seen a bear along the shorelines during these hunts, although there were plenty of them around, both blackies and grizz's.

I was surprised to read a swedish hunting magazine on the net, that had an article and pictures of a black bear being shoot by a party of swedish hunters in northern sweden. I thought that these critters had been hunted to extinction in that part of the world.

If your dad is welling to spend $$$ on a guided bear hunt in British Columbia, I am certain he can find a hunting guide that can accomodate his dream :)

In British Columbia you do not have to limit yourself to river/lake hunting there are many coastal tidal estuaries that would be awesome to hunt black bears in.

Spring would be the best time for this kind of hunt and I would recommend norther Vancouver Island the bears there are some of the largest in the world.

If you a competent canoeist, fall would be good for canoeing down the Skeena River near Terrace BC I have seen many bears on the small islands in the middle of the river also the tributary rivers that feed the Skeena will be loaded with salmon and the bears will be walking the streams looking for them.

I would paddle upstream and drift down...

Definietly search Manitoba, I do pretty much all hunting but bear, we have americans on every corner spring and fall for our bear hunts. very popular with the outfitters, plus 100,000 lakes and rivers too boot.:welcome:

as others have said Manitoba is probably a great place to start.

Here is one in northern MB - I don't think you can canoe it, but they also offer moose hunting and really great fishing if that is something else you may be interested in - once you and your Dad have your black bear of course.

Northwestern Ontario would be a great area for this kind of hunt. Long canoe routes through beautiful country and thick with bears.
Try looking for fly in operations based out of Red Lake, Sioux Lookout, Pickle Lake, Savant Lake, Armstrong, etc. Honestly, hunting bear from a canoe won't give you a super high success rate, but will give you a great experience. Pretty much all the land is public, so you can go and hunt anywhere that isn't someones yard!! :D
