Well I went out and got my first 10/22 the other day and took it out for a test run. I am seriously impressed by the out of the box accuracy and the reliability of it. My last .22 jammed up constantly. Not a single hiccup in a day of shooting with the 10/22.

One thing that was a little annoying though was the slide lock release. What a pain. Does anyone here know of a fix for this problem, and is it common on the 10/22 to have difficulty unlocking the slide?
 
You can make an 'auto bolt release' out of the stock one with a small file and 5 minutes.

But seriously, unless you're cleaning it, don't use it. It IS a pain in the butt.
 
i bought a 10/22 ruger and i can only wish i had your luck.thing fte pretty much every mag i put in it 10 round or 25.cleaned or not cleaned.very disapointed with this gun so far.its going back to the gun shop and have them look at it.i have some ideas on what it is.but hey they said they would fix it so they can.i have over 1000 rounds through it.anways when it does start to run perfectly i will be happy everything else about it is good though.only reason i bought a ruger is all the aftermarket goodies and such i could do with it.it is fun for sure and when i can get through a 25 rounder with no stovepipes im all grins.im sure this will be solved soon.
 
DirtBike, have you tried an after market extractor claw such a Volquartsen? I have one kicking around here I could sell ya at a good price:)
 
no i have not yet.the gun shop i bought it at is really good and they said if it doesnt work they will fix it ie i dont pay.just a shame to buy a new rifle and have to fix it polish ,radius the bolt to make it run right thats all.how much for extrator anyways?

When yours is broken in it will get easier. The other thing you can do is to modify it as mentioned. I made mine into a auto release and it is awesome. Dirtbikemike, try some different ammo. I have problems with some ammo like what you described. I run remington cyclones now and dont have any problems.
 
I am waiting for my first 10/22 to arrive. I bought one based on recommendations of several shooting buddies who have them & really like them. An auto bolt release, an extended mag release button & a buffer ( these are also on the way ) and hopefully it will be a great little plinker.
I expect to have to try differents brands of ammo to find out which it prefers.
 
When I got my 10.22 I expected more out of it than I originally got. I was having a hard time getting 2-3 inch groups at 50 yards!:rolleyes:
What I did that was a simple fix was to clean up the entire trigger group with my dremel. The instructions for doing so are located in the FAQ here. It's easy to do, and makes a lot of difference in the feel of the trigger, so you aren't "yanking" it. Last weekend I was pulling off '3/4 inch groups at 50 yards. Not bad for an old guy! LOL Everything on the rifle is stock except a new stock and bipod.

As far as jamming, I've only had problems when using sub-sonic stuff.

Thanks for all for all of the responses, it does sound like I got lucky on this one. My other .22, a Marlin, was accurate enough but did not like any ammo I fed it. This 10/22 is smooth and reliable. I am worried that if I buy an aftermarket 30 rnd mag that jams might happen but will try it out next week.

As far as groupings are concerned, I did not do any measuring or target shooting so I cannot say for sure (I was just beating up on dead trees etc) however I was very impressed with the Ruger's out of the box accuracy under the circumstances. Finally I have a gun that is not a lemon!
 
I bought my 1022 partly because of the rotary mag. Turns my crank big time. Also heard they were reliable. My Cooey 64 was a pain in the butt-clean after every box of ammo. Not so with the Ruger-never misses a beat and loves those minimags. Gonna run everything I can get this spring just to be sure. Enjoy. Oh and the other reason is I can tinker till I go broke. LOL. Uh, no dear-Im not buying another gun honest.
 
Absolutely! where else can you get a plinker that can go all day on 25 bucks worth of ammo! LOL

I too have a Cooey semi, and it was arguably the most un-reliable 22 I ever fired. The Ruger action is nothing if not dependable.

The only mods I've made to the action at all are the polishing of the trigger group, and this weekend I'm adding a Volquartsen extractor to see if that will improve FTF with sub-sonic ammo.

I like my little 10.22...
 
Ruger seems to have a thing for heavy triggers. The 1022, the No 1 and the 77mkII are all heavy triggered to keep the lawyers away I'm told. Had them all done now and they are sweet. Just got the 1022 done and have not shot-had Bits of Pieces put some Volq bits and do the adjustment so it will be nice fer sure. Just put a wood stock on cause it is ss and came with tupperware. MUCH nicer and has a nicer heft too. Anybody got a 4x Weaver they are lookin to offload?
