My first .308

I picked up a Rem. 700 LTR over the hollidays, which would be the first .308 I have ever owned. I have taken it out every chance I have had since and have to say I love this riffle! I have the scope for my .223 mounted for now (Shirstone 6-20x44 mildot) and it hits everything I have aimed at so far(excluding a couple of strays that hit the 9 ring on my 100 yrd target which were clearly my fault not the riffle). At this point I think it's a keeper and can't hardly wait to hit the range again.
KO

The LTR is fun gun up to 500m..

I think with the right bullet, like the 155gr Lapua Scenar BC of 508 pushed with some IMR4895 around 2850 FPS it will do well out to 1000yards as alot of state side shooters are doing with them,One tip ...DO NOT GO CHEAP on the scope!!!

the LTR is an awesome rifle great choice;)

It should do you to 1,000 yards if you can get the 155 Palma-style bullet to 2,925 fps or if you can get the 175 Sierra to 2,750. The best powders for that kind of performance are Varget, Reloder 15, and Vihtavuori N540.

If you can't reach these velocity levels, you've still got a solid 800-yard competitor.

I never heard anything about the barrel lasting longer on the .308 than the .223, but I will say that after putting about 60 rnds through it yesterday afternoon in fairly short order, the outside of the barrel was still cool. My buddy's mini-14, on the other hand, with roughly the same amount of rnds, was too hot to touch. It is the first heavy barrel riffle I have ever owned, and I quite like it. It's great to hear some feed back on loads. I have not yet worked anything up for .308, just factory ammo so far. I am sure I will have plenty of questions when I start. As for optics, I'm not yet sure what I will throw on there when I put the Shirstone on my .223, and will probably be looking for sugestions when that time comes. Airborne, how did the tactical bolt knob work on your LTR? Did you or someone have to cut and thread the original?

It is a Badger Ordnance Bolt knob & was installed by an infamous gunsmith from Calgary...Yes, it was cut & threaded to fit the new one..

KO, congrats. Nice rig. 155gr Amax, Varget, CCI BR2 primers in Win fireformed Lee collet neck sized brass. With proper action/stock bedding and load tuning, there is little issue with this rifle shooting 1/2 MOA a very very long ways out.

The furthest I have taken a 308/amax rig was 1450yds just for S&G's (velocity was 2850fps). You wouldn't want to be the small bush I was pounding.

Enjoy...

Good choice :). I got a LR/T 4.5-14x50 TMR myself.

Rohann,
have you taken it out to shoot yet. Your range only goes out to 200 I think, but it should give you a good indication on how good you are. What rounds are you putting down range.

KO, sorry for the hijack there.
You won't regret your decision. Just spend your money on a good piece of glass and lots of ammo. Everything else is gravy. I shoot the PSS in 308. If I do my part, the rounds do theirs. 49gns of rl15 on a 150gn cmj.

I've taken it out to break-in the barrel at the range, and then went shooting with an army friend from Manitoba on some logging road. I haven't really been able to do grouping testing, but my friend's smallest grouping (the best grouping shot all day; he's a sniper with 2PPCLI) was about 1.2" at 280 yards. I'd like to go to the range soon, but I have a ridiculous amount of schoolwork to do, so I won't be going for a while.

Obtunded, you have the aim about as high.

Too much fun. also, didn't see any loss of accuracy going subsonic with this bullet.

The furthest I have shot this bullet was out of a 300Wby at 3150fps. That distance was 1800m. Surprisingly flat.
