My first AR-15: Colt Canada IUR 15.7" upper?

I am wanting my first AR and have about $900-1000 to spend right now. I really would prefer to buy new but if I can find something goo on the EE I would consider it. For that amount I know I can't build a complete rifle but the Colt IUR for $800 + tax has really caught my eye. If I were to buy that now what is the minimum I would need to spend in addition to it in order to build a complete rifle? What other parts would I need besides a BCG and complete lower? Trying to avoid Norinco/DA and NEA. Also no poly lowers if possible though if I have to as a short term measure I would consider it. Thanks.

I saw a used Colt LE6920 lower in EE for sale for about $550, think it was missing a stock and buffer tube, so add maybe another $100 depending on what stock and buffer you go with, then at least another $200 of a BCG. Not sure what other options there are without going Norc. I bought a stripped lower and slapped mine together, but looking back, I probably would have just bought a complete CC lower. By time your all said and done, might cost you as much as a complete rifle.

You’ll need patience (and a little luck) for either sweet deals on parts, or patience for saving up for a complete rifle, or compromise and go Norc if you have to have it running for cheap right this minute.

You can do what I did - buy a used EE Colt 6920, keep the lower and BCG, sell the upper, and replace it with an IUR. Not cheap, but probably the most affordable way to get an all-Colt IUR rifle.
 
If your going to do a colt build, it is going to most likely cost you more money.
You pay for what you get, buy once cry once.
If you can get a complete colt lower for $750 with the black furniture.
Then get a IUR, there are more of these around, then lowers.
That IUR is a great price, wish I got mine for that price.
 
Ok, I just did the math and it is going to be a while before I can afford to build a complete Colt IUR rifle. For $900 + tax I can get an NEA-15 14.5" complete rifle. How much would I regret going that route to get into an AR? Is a crappy rifle better than no rifle? Or am I better off saving my money?

The third option as suggested by Sasquatch would be to go with a Bushmaster lower to save money.

If your going to spend 900 bones to buy a cheap rifle just to have one, you'd be better suited to buy a norinco for 450-500 off the EE. Norinco isn't that terrible, it still comes out to the range and runs the same paces as my custom colt SPR and my custom spikes SBR.
Chinese metal aside, I'd still recommend saving for what you really want. Anything less and your just going to buy another one and spend even more money. Wait, who am I kidding, of course you'll buy another one.
 
Wanna talk cheap, I started with a Norc. No regrets about having it, had lots of fun, and it satisfied the immediate desire to have an AR when I couldn't afford a Colt (back then US-Colts were $2500). I lost a pile of money selling it of course which was to be expected.

I would have kept it, but the reason I jumped ship was because the cost of US ARs took a nosedive and then the CC started becoming available. I may still end up getting a Norc again just as a beater rifle. I guess it really depends, do you see yourself getting a CC IUR eventually? If so, save your money unless you think you will end up keeping both the NEA and the IUR.

I have owned a Norinco (HP9 12 Gauge) and my experience was the same as yours. It satisfied an immediate desire and I have no regrets, it functioned perfectly for me. At this point though I don't want something that rough around the edges (literally and figuratively). I did a bunch more reading on the NEA last night and I don't think I want to take that much risk. So now it's a matter of saving up enough to get the complete Colt IUR rifle or get the IUR now and probably a Bushmaster lower and a BCG to complete the build. I guess I can always upgrade the lower later and sell the Bushmaster right? So much to think about! Thanks to everybody who has provided input.

Haha, I had an LE6920 lower for my IUR, but then my OCD kicked in hard when the stripped CC lowers started coming out so I ended up getting one because I had to have sort of matching CC upper and lower for a complete rifle.....I was originally going to strip my LE6920 and move all the parts over to the CC lower, but then I saw a great deal on a DD LPK and ended up building up my CC lower....and of course I was going to sell my complete LE6920 lower, but then I saw great deals on two uppers (Goddamn EE is going to put me in the poor house) so I ended up buying two uppers.....now I need another lower, lol! I'm an idiot.
 
Thanks Mister Donut, I already found that one. Just trying to decide if it is worth it to me to spend an extra $400 to go with the Colt lower. I want to keep it Canadian but am having difficulty justifying that decision.

Depends on how bad your OCD is, lol!

Mine was bad enough to justify it, though my Colt USA lower was just fine, haha!
 
That's the thing, I know I'll just end up spending more money later to get the Colt lower. This disease never ends does it... lol

Screw it, I think i'm going to go ahead and drop the coin now. Just have to keep the wife from ever seeing the invoice or the credit card bill.
