My first BCL 102 hiccup - BCM Tac Latch punches me in the nose

Had my first BCL 102 issue - not really an issue with the rifle but an issue with a BCM Gunfighter extended tac latch.

Rifle has been flawless through 450 rounds with one FTF.

I purchased a new VLTOR BCM Gunfighter extended tac latch a few weeks ago and tried it out tonight for the first time.

I wanted an extended charging handle due to having a scope and finding it a bit awkward to operate with the original latch given the width of the stock and scope.

Worked fine for around 30 rounds.

Then, on the last round fired the BCM charging handle smacked me in the nose on the bolt hold open.

A first I thought maybe I rode the charging handle forward so loaded up another mag and again, got smacked in the nose.

Frustrated I made sure the charging handle was locked forward and wouldn’t release if i pulled on the right side - its not the ambi version. Used a different mag also.

Call me stupid but i did this multiple times and got smacked in the nose with the charging handle each time i fired the last round. It doesn’t really hurt - just kinda surprises you (ex boxer:)

I didn’t have the original charging handle with me at the range so couldn’t try it to see if the same thing would happen with it.

Inspection of the rifle doesn’t reveal anything obvious. And I compared this BCM Gunfighter to the one’s on my AR 15’s and with the exception of the size they appear pretty much identical.

Anyone else experience this? The BCM Gunfighter is medium size not ambi.

I will try to get to the range with the factory charging handle in the next few weeks to see if it also wants to punch me in the face

had the same thing happen with a raptor on one of my rifles. switched it to a different one and has been good since. i was previously using a tac latch on the stock charging handle..maybe the steel latch(assuming it is steel) wore it down enough.

Sounds like it's not latching in for whatever reason. I prefer just adding a tac latch these days to the stock charging handles. Although the Raptor ones are fairly nice.

I put a Phase 5 one on the demo gun and it’s been working well....close to 2000 rounds thru it so far. I haven’t tried other brands.

Factory charging handle was doing this to me. Same charging handle as you is on it now and was also doing it. The upper receiver on mine is quite rounded in the little latch pocket.
I took my BCM CH apart, gave it a slight file to make it a sharp edge again at tip with a little rake. Also added two 1/8" balls to either end of spring to add some preload. Works perfect again.

Huh, lucky it even goes in. Just got my Gen 2 102, and the 'ears' on my BCM are a little to big to even fit properly:

I wonder if BCM’s specs are out as my BCM Gunfighter ears are very very close to the factory charging handle size and it went in with no issues,

The ears on mine look very different to yours.

Damn.. might be a QC issue... I dont mind filing a bit off, its just I shouldn't have to :(

Edit: wow, computer looks dirty with the camera flash on

Lol I would have thought that after the second or so time of the same thing happening, you might have moved your face away from the fast moving piece of metal

FWIW we had a range gun doing this. We kept looking at the latching end, but it turned out that the buffer was too short and allowed the BCG to move far enough to the rear that it pushed the charging handle out into peoples nose. Different charging handles allow for more or less BCG travel.

I'm not sure what you mean.
Once fired the bolt rotates and releases BCG from chamber allowing rearwards travel. At which point the BCG should be free and clear of charging handle.
The bolt carrier gas key (or larger diameter of carrier) would smash into threaded tail end of lower receiver far before touching the charging handle off (no?) if the buffer didn't limit its travel.

The carrier key can and does impact the rear portion of the charging handle on AR10 platforms if the BCG travels too far rearward. Presumably this is also possible with the BCL102.
