Here's my attempt at posting pics of my first deer.
Date and time weren't set on the camera...."doh!"
Story goes like this.
After losing my deer hunting partner to a freak motorcycle accident this summer I managed to convince a few friends to try deer hunting. We acquired a hunting lease on St. Joe's Island, (MadDog's territory) but we were too late to apply for tags in that WMU. Not expecting to actually see deer, let alone a buck, we kinda went about the whole thing as nothing more than a good time to be had by a few good friends. I had never got a deer, until today.
Well, on the first day we saw 6 does and on the second day we saw a spike horn that was not around long enough for a shot.
But today at 7:30am,....our last day hunting, I happened to see this guy walk about 65 meters from my blind. Using my Ruger Mini-30, (that I bought off a fellow Gunnut), I caught a glimpse of him (and his rack) through some thick sugar maple bush. I led him with my scope to an opening a few feet ahead of him and held my breath until he walked into my sight.
I fired with a prayer on the tip of my tongue, and lost sight of the deer as the gun went bang. I looked feverishly as it seemed to just disappear. I proceeded out of my blind and just behind a thicket of root and brush, about 7 meters from where I shot him, I spotted my first deer. What I thought was a small rack turned out to be an eleven pointer....and what I thought was a small deer, turned out to be 181 lbs dressed...(which also turned a few heads at the weighing station.)
I'm just starting to feel the effects of gravity. It's been a great day, with some great friends....and I just had to share it with ya.
Good luck guys....(it worked for me)
