On this past sunday, my last day in camp, with the Barrie Hunt Club, I joined my fellow hunters on a 30 minute uphill walk to one of the hunting positions.

As I was catching my breath a deer ran out just in front of me. We were out of doe tags and I thought I was seeing a doe. I readied myself for the buck I was sure would follow. I then looked closely at the "doe" and realized it had a rack.

I was able to get my Savage 340C 30/30 on target and deliver a good shot. Just a little high as I got the tops of the lungs and the liver. I saw two puffs of fur and knew it was a through and through.

We tracked it only 50 yards before we found a nice 8 point buck on the ground already expired.

I don't have the other pictures yet but this is one of it on the pole. For my first deer I think I did alright.

BTW: We had enough tenderloin to feed 5. Charley prepared a meal that was superb. And on a wood burning stove too!

Awesome !! Congrats and welcome to the addiction :D
I was flipping back in time this morning and broke out the photos of my first deer... It's a day you'll never forget ;)

Good for you! Remember that day well. We hunted last week and got one doe between the 4 of us. Actually it was a fawn. The doe was right beside her and didn't budge after the fawn went down...but he missed..*&^%$#@!. Then on Thursday one of our guys shot at a buck. Hit it at 75+ yards with a slug. It left a decent blood trail. But after 6 hours of trailing we had to give up because it was dark. I have a new respect for bucks now. Up and down ridges, through swamps, over beaver dams ..geez did that buck ever walk. I think we trailed it for over 2 KMs, expected to see it piled up every few feet..but no. Even tried the next day to pick up the trail. nada. Good to see yours was pretty clean. Congrats.

Congrats!! You will relive that event over and over.
I shot my first deer in 1959, and if I close my eyes, I can still mentally review the scenario from start to finish.
Enjoy the great eating that will be.
