So a good buddy of mine decided he would take me out with his brother on thier hunting trip to Williams Lake, B.C. . Plan was for Mule Deer and White Tail. I decided to get a Black Bear liscence too as it would be just one more option if the deer disapointed us and I was told bear meat is really lean and tasty. Sure enough the deer disappointed us as it was way too hot out and they were still way up in the mountains and what we did see wasn't legal to shoot as it was open for 4 point or better Mule Deer bucks. We couldnt find a White Tail if our lives depended on it.

So early one morning while walking along a old gravel road with a creek bed on one side and a big hill side on the other a Black Bear came running across out of the creek and up the hill about 15 feet were he stopped dead and just watched me. I chambered a round in my Ruger Hawkeye 30/06 and lined up my scope on his chest just behind his shoulder. It was a perfect shot as I was shooting into the hill side instead of up it, so if I did miss the bullet would simply enter the dirt. I carefully squeezed the trigger and let my 165 grain Nosler Partition take flight on him from 150 yards. The bear took off into the trees on the hill side. I knew that I hadnt missed and we proceeded to cautiously enter the trees on the hill side. He went about 25 feet and just dropped as the bullet had done its job. Total weight was 285 lbs and it took two of us struggling to pull him out of the trees into a area to start our work.

We cleaned him immediately and headed straight to the game butchers place in town. Where he was skinned and all the fat removed before he was cut into steaks and the rest de-boned to turn into sausages and peperoni. Total amout of meat removed from him was 125 lbs. He wasnt a trophy animal but a pretty good size I was told by the game Butcher. One of the biggest he had been brought in the past two years.

Any ways thats my first ever Big Game hunting story. Theres a picture of me below with my prized bear from the trip. He looks a bit small compared to me but I weigh as much as he does. I strongly encourage anyone who has zero experience hunting and wants to learn to go out with experienced people as they really teach you alot about how its done properly. This way you will be successful and most importantly stay safe.

Where did you take him in Williams Lake to get butchered?

Cost me 111$ after taxes to have the hide removed, fat removed, cut into 28 steaks and the rest of the meat deboned. He wrapped and froze the steaks for me and bagged and froze the rest of it. Great guy to deal with. Did it all in 3 days for me.

Bear fat makes really flaky and amazing pastry btw :)

congratulations! not sure that i would call an animal that yielded 125 lbs of boned out meat "small".

all the old timers say that bear fat is the best fat for cooking.
