Met up with a fellow Gun Nutz today and decided to try our hand at an afternoon of hunting Grouse only a few hours drive north of Toronto. We made a stop at BPS and then Elmswoods Sports and did a little shopping. Finally arrived at our first hunting spot around 2:30pm (yes late). We hiked through very thick bush up and down hills for about 8KM round trip only flushing two grouse. We couldn't get a shot off on the first and my buddy Frank missed on the second. We then decided to try another spot about 20 minutes further west. This time the hike wasn't so bad, probably 7KM hahaha! After a long hike we decided to sit and rest before hiking back to the truck. I then said to Frank I'd really like to push on just a little further as I have a feeling about the next set of bush. He agreed and off we went. We probably hiked about 1KM when Frank spotted a grouse on the edge of a big rock hill. He took a shot and either wounded it or missed it but it flew down into a valley. Frank went to the right and I went to the left of the valley. I spotted the grouse walking along the bottom of the hill in some thick bush. At first I had no shot but patience was the key. The grouse moved into my sighs between two trees and I took the shot. BAM! Instant kill almost decapitating it.

This was my first day of ever hunting in Ontario and my first Grouse. Looking forward to cooking his breast up tomorrow.

Thanks for the awesome day Frank. Looking forward to our next outing!

I'm still pretty pumped!

lol right on..

Kind of sounds like my morning yesterday. I was walking and walking alongside an old mountain road and didn't think I would see anything when all of a sudden about 30yrds infront of me I seen the head peek out, raised the gun and slamed him dead in in his track. About the same size as the one you shot.

Would have taken a picture, but I never brought my camera ;)

First spotting and kill for me this year for ruffies.
PS
I have an 870 Super Mag as well, but the synthetic version. Gotta love em eh?

What shot are you using?
I like #6 heavy loads myself.

Oh, and congrats on your first grouse ;)
EDIT:
Where is your blaze orange mister?

Got out yesterday with my 870 Super Mag, loaded with #6 heavies, and saw nothing but squirrels...

Funny that kill was with #6 shot as well guys.

North, I was wearing an orange vest over that and orange hat. The photo was taken back at my truck where I had taken the vest off.

lol right on..

I will answer that for you because apparantly you cant read the hunting regs before you accuse people of breaking the law....

In ontario where there is no open big game rifle season excluding black bears( which happens to be NOW) blaze orange IS NOT mandatory

have a good day and I hope you learned something today.... oh and next time read the regs before you assume people are breaking the law(pg 23)...( thats kind of ironic isn't it;)

oh and before you cry about me being a mean person,... remeber that you asked for it by sticking your niose where it shouldn't be

"Apparently" you don't know how to spell so well.

On to defending myself. Who are you to come in here and be like that. For one pal. Blaze Orange is law in my WMU as Bear Season, is in progress right now and ends Oct 31st.

Before you try pissing in my pot, MAYBE YOU! should re read the regs. It says the only time your allowed to not wear blaze orange is if your hunting bear in a tree stand.
By the way, blaze orange is also required of all hunters in Deer and Moose season as well.
Let me guess, your from Southern Ontario...

PS
Shot two more Grouse today :)

EDIT: And Bear Season IS NOT exempt from hunters needing to wear blaze orange. Once a person "hunting bear" is in their tree stand, they are allowed to remove their orange. As for me and the next guy hunting small game, you NEED to wear it. Kind of "ironic" aint it? ;)

For the record I did not feel like northwoodslivin was accusing me of breaking any laws. If the first thing he said was a rant about wearing blaze orange then yes I probably would have felt that way. However, he was kind enough to congratulate me and contribute to the conversation. This leads me to believe he was being more curious than anything else.

Secondly, lets keep flames out of my thread please. This was a very big day for me and I'm proud as hell to be able to contribute a report to CGN.

Amen Robinhood.

Just don't take kindly to people calling me stupid.

Maybe he should come here and say that same thing to the 500+ hunters that are currently up here hunting bear and small game driving and walking down the streets in their blaze orange

And as I said earlier, if you want to make the trek up this way, I'd be delighted to take you out grouse hunting with me. Lot's of wabbitz here as well ;)
Cheers

Robin hood... I knew he wasn't grilling you about not wearing orange.. he was just prying...

well first off let me clear up the misconceptions you appear to have in your first year of hunting

blaze orange is also required of all hunters in Deer and Moose season as well.
WRONG!!!! why don't you tell that to the CO who stopped me last week while I was BOW HUNTING MOOSE in full camo( btw I also got stopped bird hunting last yr on the 16th of september 2006 wearing( you guessed it!!!) FULL CAMO
and both instances the CO's never even batted an eye about the lack of orange

It says the only time your allowed to not wear blaze orange is if your hunting bear in a tree stand.
WRONG!! it says that water fowlers and turkey hunters and bow hunters( moose and deer hunting during an ARCHERY ONLY season) don't have to wear orange

Let me guess, your from Southern Ontario
Wrong!!! im from Thunder Bay

ok back to me explaing the regs to you...how can I say this any clearer?

hmm maybe if I took the exact words out of page 23 of the 2007 ontario regs and then explained it in simple easy to understand points it might may make sense to you
regsforjailbait.jpg

okay so lets see.....

it says you don;t have to wear orange when there is currently no open rifle season for deer or moose is there an open rifle season for deer or moose? NOPE

it says black bear hunters have to wear orange when they are not in a tree stand is he hunting black bears? NOPE

so by the powers of deduction, I can deduce that you DO NOT have to wear orange in the above circumstances or other wise commonly known as the time this guy shot his bird and posed in the photgraph

PS.. I didn;t want to start this but I really hate when guys play internet cops( CO's in this thread) who are you to assumes that he isn't standing in his back yard or posing for a picture in the lanway beside his buddies place...

bottom line is don't judge or assume someone is doing something illegal because in the picture a tag isn't showing or he isn't wearing orange or an orange hat becasue YOU weren't there and YOU don't know the whole story or in this case don't know the law....:)

game set and match point...........NEXT!!!!:ninja::D

btw I have taken about 15 birds so far... about half sprucies and half ruffies and 1 sharp tail.. good job on the birds

Dude.

Your misunderstanding the regs.

It say's that ALL licensed hunters, including archery hunters hunting DURING the GUN season for DEER & MOOSE,"BEAR INCLUDED IT IS A GUN SEASON are required to wear hunter orange. As well, all black bear hunters hunting during the black bear season are required to wear hunter orange except when in a tree stand.

(This exception is in place because, unlike deer and moose, black bears have color vision.)

Wild turkey hunters and archery hunters in archery-only seasons are exempt from hunter orange

Now where in God's name do you see that Grouse hunters in the Black Bear GUN season exempt from hunter orange? .. thank you, my point exactly.

And for the record, I think your full of sh!t when you speak of being stopped by a CO with nothing on. He probably never did anything because you were probably stopped in your car or truck.

So, if you wrote these regs, then I guess you have a different understanding of them then me. But everyone that I see out in the bush "came across a hunter in the woods today" they we're wearing their blaze orange.

As Robinhood suggested, piss off and keep your wrong advice out of his thread.
"pisses out the flames"
Sorry Robinhood.

Good luck with the grouse hunting.

And I am done with replying to your ill terms of Ontario's law's Grouseman

And for the record, Grouse man... this is my second year hunting.
AND IM LOVIN IT :D

Now with all do respect to the owner of this thread, leave it alone. As am I

PS
Give the MNR a call tomorrow as well.

Congrats! That must've been an enjoyable trip. I concur with your sense of understanding.....good sportsmanship attitude.

Hope you were also carrying some #7 1/2 or 8 - a 6 at close flush could have pulverized that bird......:)

Under this regulation, all licensed hunters, including
archery hunters hunting during the gun season for deer
and moose, are required to wear hunter orange. As well, all
black bear hunters hunting during the black bear season are
required to wear hunter orange except when in a tree stand.
(This exception is in place because, unlike deer and moose,
black bears have colour vision.)

Actually northwoodslivin it seems to be you that is injecting meaning into the regs that aren't there in words. It says ALL hunters during deer or moose GUN seasons (excepting waterfowlers and turkey hunters) must wear orange. Then a separate statement says that all BLACK BEAR HUNTERS (not ALL hunters) must wear hunter orange during bear season when not in a tree stand.

Hence, a grouse hunter, hunting in an area in which the deer and moose gun seasons were closed but in which the bear season was open would NOT have to wear hunter orange. (Wearing black woolies likely wouldn't be advisable however).

Congrats on the grouse robinhood.

Ok guys this crap has to stop in my thread... We're not children here... MNR's phone number is Toll Free so you can call at no cost anywhere in Ontario.

I spoke with the MNR... During rifle season for any game (Deer, Moose, Bear etc) you MUST wear blaze orange. HOWEVER, the MNR officer advised me that waterfoul hunters that are hunting from a boat NEVER need to wear blaze orange BUT if they are hunting from land then they NEED blaze orange during the rifle seasons.... When no rifle seasons are open anyone can wear full camo or a pink freaking tutu in the woods if they like.

You know what they say about opinions right?

Just make the call to the MNR and ask....
