My first Milsurp, photos and questions

I got this from my late Grandfather in law. Sometimes marriage can be good.
I know very little about the milsurps so i was hoping you could help.

What are the gaps in the stock for/from, I am guessing from the original wood?

What do all the markings mean?

These questions have probably been asked a million times, sorry.

yes the gaps are from the original configuration.

it's a BSA No1Mk3,

someone else will have to say more about the markings
