Hey all, been lurking here a while and cant seem to find the answer to this question.

I understand that some bolt actions offer a left or right handed option. Is it safe to fire a right handed weapon with either hand?

ex: Im looking at a Norc m305, it is semi auto right ejection. Would it be safe to fire it left handed as well even though my face happens to be on the side of the ejection?

bear in mind that im fairly new to shooting and am doing my PAL/RPAL this week.

I just couldnt find anything in the CFSC/CRFSC books about it.

Thanks!

Most knowledge starts with a question....;)

If you look at a firearm and see where the spent cases/brass eject (as you noted), you'll see why some southpaws don't like firing right-handed semi-automatics....I guess it depends on how hot the brass gets? :p

Ear and eye protection are always a must....and if you wear range-appropriate clothing, you should be okay...with the above two details noted (i.e. heat of the brass, your tolerance to it)....

Push comes to shove, you can always use a brass-catcher/shell deflector.....:)

hmmm... thanks for the reply...my only thought was "where will the brass fly" but like you stated, with the obvious protection used it may not be an issue...

as long as I wont die if I attempt it... I was really wondering if it is a horrendously unsafe practice...

I shoot left.. and have far more m14's than i should. :D
I've never had an issue.

Just watch your right hand thumb placement near the oprod.

Should be safe, only you might get all cramped up when you cycle the action. Then again, you might not. You'll probably be fine regardless, but your best bet is to try a couple different rifles and actions when you get the chance to see for yourself.

Cheers,
Nick

I'm a south paw and have many semi-auto's (m-14,10/22,sks) with no problem. You may take the odd case on the forearm (worst is with shot guns). The only left gun I have is a pump 870 shot gun and I rarely take it out of the safe.
