So im going to be taking my restricted PAL in a few weeks here and im interested in getting my first pistol. Im look for a gun in 9mm or .45 cal and I have $800 to spend on it. Any suggestions would be great. Iv been looking at a few guns like a glock 17 or 20 , CZ 85 , Sig Pro 2022 , Springfield xd or 1911. They seen to be around the price I want to spend. But other then the price I dont know anything about what each gun offers , or what to look for in a pistol. Iv also been looking into starting IPSC in my area it looks like alot of fun. So what do you guys think I should get?

Glock 17 and S&W MP in 9mm would be a good start.
Once you buy one start saving up for another and another so forth.
+1 on the G17
For 800$ you can find a 3rd gen. Glock 17 in good shape, plus few mags (only 20$-25$ each), and you will have some money left to buy ammos.
All the ones listed seem to be of good quality so the question would be which one fits your hand and feels the best to you. Even if you can't rent or find club members with one to try, just pick up each one and see which fits best and feels right.
NEVER buy a gun because someone said "this one is better" without seeing how it feels. What is good for someone else might be the totally wrong gun for you and a waste of $800.

Go to a gunshop and handle a S&W M&P...that would be a good buy, if you like it of course!
I did, im just letting the gentleman/lady know that for 800 they can get everything new, not just as you said "in good shape" (meaning used in my books). New Glock 17 ($596.50), New mags ($30-35). Hope this helps, take care.

Yeah, make sure you get a chance to test it out before you buy it.
Alot of people like Glocks, but I find their triggers are really strange, instead of breaking like glass, it king of mushes like a sponge or something.
I'm on the hunt for a first handugn, and so far I've got a chance to fire a Glock, Browning Hi-power, M1911, CZ-75, and a S&W M&P 9.
I'd like to get the chance to fire a Beretta 92FS and a Sig P226 before I make my final decision.

As a first pistol I would get a CZ 75B or 85 in 9mm. You can’t kill them; mine has shot 10000+ rounds and is still going strong.
My second pistol was a CZ 97 in 45ACP. Accurate to shoot.
Third was a Beretta, sold it.
4th a S&W 686 love it.
5th a STI Target Master in 45ACP love it.
It all depends on the size of your hand and what venue you want to shoot in.
