I am looking to buy my first pistol a.s.a.p. I am looking at 1911 styles and thinking about 45 acp or 9mm. Anyone out there got any ideas which brand or from where I should order?

Go to some ranges and try some out. See what fits your hand best and which caliber you are comfortable with. Feel like rolling your own? 9mm is obviously cheapest to fire besides 22. My hand really likes the M&P 45.

If your looking for a 9mm... CZ SP01 Shadow or S&W M&P
For 1911 I would say Kimber or a Para....

Check the dealers above to see what they have in stock and get some ideas on prices and what your budget should be.

Aside from price range what do you intend to do with the gun. Shoot IPSC/IDPA, plink, Bullseye. Purpose would help with our suggestions. Do you reload?

If you are certain you like 1911 frame and 45 acp round particularly - have a look at Tanfoglio. Its not as cheap as Norcs but I just love mine (Witness Custom). Freedom Ventures carries them, check top of this page for a link. I tried many other brands and Tanfoglio seems to be much more accurate, almost as good as accurised by smith, trigger is light and crisp. It will take you a lot of money to bring norc into the same league.

For a first gun I would probably suggest getting 9mm since you're going to want to shoot it lots. It's a great round to practice with. As for picking the actual gun. You'll want to go to gun stores and handle them first. I personally wouldn't recommend a 1991 style gun as your first gun but that's merely my opinion.

Personally though I hate Glocks, I'd recommend one for a first gun (preferably Glock 17). The CZ's, beretta's, Sig's are also great choices to. Make sure you get to play with them a bit first though.

1911 in 45ACP with a .22LR slide is also a good way to get started without breaking the bank and still having a big boy gun.
