Just brought back my Cooey 600 from the gun shop in Powassan today. Great finish and blueing with 100 rounds of 22lr all for $125. Not too shabby.

There's only one problem: I noticed at the store that it had been previously drilled for a scope on the left side of the reciever, so I figured it would save me time and money when I wanted to get some mounts and a scope. I just can't identify what kind of mount would fit it.

There are 4 holes on the left side of the reciever in two groups. The two holes in both groups are about .5 in (or less) ctc apart. Two of the holes are ahead of the bolt while the other two are about 2 1/2 in back between the rear of the bolt and the back end of the reciever. They all line up.

Any ideas?

There are a couple of options. There was a stamped steel 2 piece mount made, or there is a Weaver sidemount base, that accepts Weaver sidemount rings. This is an older rifle, you might have to look around a bit to find mounts. I would suggest that you call Epps in Orillia.

'Old' sounds expensive....

I'll probably drop in when I'm headed home next.

Was the 600 made before the 60? There is no serial number on the rifle so I don't know when it was made.

That sounds like a weaver side mount # 4 base, epps has them, you need the side mount itelf, that contours to the barrell, and then the piece that actually attatches to that, and has scope rings built into it.

Epps will know, and I know they have the #4 side in stock, I called about one 2 weeks ago, so call to be sure.

One more question:

This rifle cocks on closing and it is very hard to close the bolt, to the point where my palm hurts and turns red. Is this normal? I've lubed up the bolt real well, especially the rod that connects the hammer and the bolt proper, but it hasn't made much of a difference.

Any ideas?

Somethings up.
It should be as slick as whale poop through an iceflow.

You might want to take her back to the shop and get them to take a peek at it.

Sometimes people get weird ideas about removing bolts from their rifles, and then accidentally mix bolts up. Or something got bent after being dropped etc. I have come across a few Cooeys like this over the years.

The mounts should be cheap, and if you have a local gunshow coming up, that is another place to look for them super cheap. :D

Does it still do this with the tubular magazine out? You could even try removing and cleaning the bolt and the chamber. Maybe it's just powder residue or cosmoline?

The model 60 came first. The 600 was the re-designation given after Winchester aquired Cooey.

I got lucky with mine (coincidentally enough, I bought it from a friend who lives in Powassan), which is a later-model that features dovetails for scope rings. I ended up putting on a $15 scope I picked up at Canadian Tire.

Old need not be expensive. You may find yourself able to find a mount that fits the tappings you have, or maybe you can hook up with someone who can modify something to work.

Yep, it does it even when the mag tube is out. I've already gave the whole thing a good cleaning, including the chamber. When the bolt was out, and lubed, it was still difficult to pull it.

Maybe I'm just weak...

Phrong... was that Jamie?

I am guessing here without seeing the rifle but I suspect something is wrong with the bolt, take it to a gunsmith to check before fireing it (rather spend the $$$ than loseing an eye)
