My First Savage 1899

I think its actually an 1895, although not sure how the transition was made from the change of the model number....

Anyhow, its a 4 digit Savage in 303 Savage with what looks to be a factory special order 30in octagonal barrel.

No one comment on the wood....it looks like poop and I need to get some nice stuff. Unfortunately the original wood, like most 99's it seems cracked or broke, so the industrious chap who had this one obviously did his own up. It was well done but just not....nice looking.

I am a Winchester guy, but seeing a thread full of Savage lever actions sort of whet my appetite for one.

Now just to find some 303 Savage.......

I can think of a couple people that will like that. I am also more of a winchester guy but do appreciate a good savage. with a 4 digit number it would most likely be a 1895. good find, haven't seen many of them around.

That's usually an issue, finding the ammo. About a year ago I had two very nice shape boxes of original Dominion .303 Savage. A fellow CGN'er took them off my hands for $50 each.

If there is a round cocking indicator on the top of the breech bolt it is an 1895. That is one long barrel! The new lumber will make it real nice.

It does have a little hole in the bolt that goes between C and S. Smart system for an old gun.

Stocks look pretty nice to me. Looks like white oak.

If it is round then it is a 95 then. Good for you! As far as brass goes, you may be further ahead just getting some Bertram. Some have had success blowing out 220 Swift. I've yet to try.
