At the end of February, I bought a Mossberg 940 Pro Tactical as a birthday present to myself😊. The day after ordering, I had to go in for surgery, then after a few extra complications, I finally got to shoot it this week. So, a review.

I decided to buy a gas operated, semi-automatic 12-gauge shotgun. Most of my firearms are semi-automatic, because that’s what I know best from my military service. I researched shotguns for over 6 months. I read and watched way, way too much. And then I overthought it. People said don’t get a Mossberg 940!
It’s a POS!
Get the Benelli or a Berretta. So naturally, I got the 940 Pro…

I shoot left and like an ambidextrous safety. I wanted an optic, and I liked the 940’s factory RMSc cutout (I purchased an Osight S RMSc red dot during a 40% off deal that I got wind off). I also wanted a choke. Then the price. The Mossberg was less than ½ that of the M4, and $800ish cheaper than a 1301 Gen 2.
That’s quite a bit of extra ammo!

I knew that the new Mossberg 940 SPX was about to be released, and was looking for a sale on a legacy 940 Pro Tactical. There was a great sale in February, so I bought one.

The plastic fore end that comes with the 940 Pro Tactical is not good IMO. Much too narrow for me and no place to put a weapons light. The solution was to buy a Messa Tactical Truckee fore end. I ordered one and it arrived a week later. It was very easy to install. The Truckee fore end is wider, has M-LOKs and is made of aluminum. I took the Olight off my PC9 and installed it on the Truckee.

I've shot rifles and pistols, but I'd never fired a shotgun of any kind. I had never even handled any live shotgun ammunition. So, this was new to me.

Off to the range and I shot a total of 150 shells. I had 2 x FTF during the first 15 shells. After that = no issues. It ate Troy buckshot, Federal slugs, old IVI buckshot, Federal Top Gun 1 oz. trap and some really old Winchester 7.5 trap loads. Nothing under an advertised 1250 fps. All 2 ¾”.

I set up the Osight red dot in no time. It’s an excellent piece of kit (especially for the price I paid). Direct bolt-on with the provided screws. Clear glass. Bright reticle and dot. Auto on/off. Rechargeable. It’s my fourth “O” product.

The gun recoils on the slugs, and those old Winchesters too. Nothing terrible. It holds 4+1 shells. It’s super easy to load. I’ve never loaded any other shotgun, but this 940 Pro is a joy to load (yes, it can ghost load too).

The bad things about the gun: 1. The front sight isn’t aligned perfectly. However, I knew I would get a RMSc optic, so I don’t care too much. 2. The safety was SUPER stiff when I got it. It needed a few drops of Hoppe's gun oil and then work it back and forth 99 times, and now it’s a nice click-click. 3. The gun was an oily mess when I received it. I Stripped it. Cleaned it. Lubed it and reassembled it. Cause that’s what you’re supposed to do.

So far, nice shotgun and nice optic.

Very nice, I love the 940 series of shotguns, and as a fellow lefty the tang safety is the way to go 👍
My friend has been running one in competition for over a year now and loves it. Enjoy yours, they are a blast
