Hi guys,

I took my first skeet game with my buddy this afternoon. It was just GREAT!

I love the game. Using my friend's Semi Auto, I got all frist 10 clays, Amazing!

Now I am seriouly thinking to get an O/U. but I will get a BPS first.

OK...slow down...take a breath.....you shot around of skeet.....it's alot of fun....so your going to buy a BPS which probably isn't the best choice for a beginner skeet shooter(due to doubles). A semi or o/u with screw in choke tubes sounds like a more versatile gun for field and skeet, but it's your dime!

Thanks for your advise. I understand BPS is not good for Skeet, but a good O/U is way expensive. Any suggestions? my budget is arround 1k

If I were in your shoes I would look around for a good used Beretta semi or o/u or a used Citori(Browning),or save up abit more for a new Beretta semi, it will make learning to wingshoot and skeet easier.

Get a cheap semi or pump. Remington makes the 870, or even the Norinco 870 nock-off will do.

If your wanting to spend more then take a look at Beneli's M1 (semi shotgun).

If your wanting a shotgun strictly for trap/range then go ahead and look at the O/U, or SxS. Ruger, Berreta, Browning all make high end shotguns.

I find you have more luck with field guns then fancy dancy high end show off trap guns. I get in shoot off at our trap club with the guys and their O/U's, and I shoot a mossberg 835.

If you get a gun ONLY for skeet, you can make yourself a good deal. Look around for one of the 'older' gas guns before they got so damned versatile. I mean find one with fixed choke, 2-3/4" only, and not safe for steel. Nobody else wants them. All you need to do is ream out the choke to Open Cyl or Skeet, and you're laughing. Look for an old Winchester Super X-1, if you can.

Maple Sea, I am fairly new to the skeet game as well.Ask members of your club to try various guns and pick one that you shoot well. Most guys are more than willing to help out a new guy.Ben Hunchak & Grouse Man provide good advice.Look for a used model at the various dealers.
I've tried an O/U,a Beretta which I didn't shoot all that well and have since picked up a used Remington 1100 at a bargain price which seems to suit me. Cheers Bac4

Congrats. I would look into a over under with tubes you may want to try trap. Steoger makes a over under for under $1000 there are a few others I just picked up a used one for 350.

... an another one bites the dust !

Stupid, stupid game ... it will only keep you amused for the next
40 or 50 years or so. :D

Welcome to the loonie bin ! Now go shoot some trap, Sporting
Clays & 5 stand to get yourself thoroughly initiated and confused.

And get a good, well paying job ... fun with guns is pricey ...

Enjoy :shotgun:

Beretta Boy is so right.I am getting into this game late in life and am about to join the ranks of the retired.I'm trying to figure out how to budget pension monies to support this new shotgun habit.Skeet, 5 stand, sporting clays is a lot of fun and is very addictive.I wish I had started this earlier in life.(As well as being a better wingshot!!!)

There isn't anything wrong with a BPS, it just _may_ not be the ideal choice.

You will have to decide what you want your gun to do.
-Do you want a 'one gun does everything' gun (clays,, hunting, zombie defence.....)
-Do you want a shooting sports gun
-Do you want a skeet only gun
-Do you want to shoot more than one gauge
-etc etc etc etc

I would suggest that if possible that you borrow a gun so that you can wait for a bit and decide what kind of gun you want.

If you have the itch and absolutely have to buy a gun (I've been there), then look/ask around the local skeet club for a used gun. That will get you started, and when you want to flip it to buy your next skeet gun (when, not if) you won't lose as much in the transaction.

When I started I had a 870. I decided I needed a semi, so I bought an 11-87. Shortly there after I decided to buy an over/under. A while later I bought a tubed over/under. A while later I bought a high end tubed over under.

At every 'I need a better gun' stage I wished I had the original money I put in to the previous gun.

You will need to figure out what kind of a gun you want. This takes a little time. Even still, if you are like me, what you want will keep changing with time.

So, do you want a one gun does all gun? The BPS is a pretty good choice (BFD, you pump the gun between shots). A semi would also do well.

Do you want a shooting sports gun? You will want something that will shoot a few shells at a time. A good semi (Beretta would be my choice) or a mid-range O/U (Beretta, Browning) would work well. Make sure you get something with choke tubes.

Skeet only gun? Probably a mid to higher grade O/U, although a lot of people shoot higher end Semi's (you are going to pound the hell out of a semi due to the volume of rounds so don't go low end). Perhaps an adjustable stock is something you will want.

Multiple gauge skeet? Then you are looking at full length gauge tubes or multi barrel sets.

High end Skeet gun? Well, they start at $10k....

One thing that comes to mind is this; No one I know has ever regretted paying more money than they had planed to get better gun.

Good luck with your quest for a gun. If at all possible be patient, and get the gun that you really want.

Brad.

Thanks all above, your advise are very helpful.

Brad, you are absolutly right. Let me share my story.

I am a newbie. Just got my PAL last year and have no idea what kind of game I should play and what kind of shotgun I should buy. So I decided my first shotgun should be a 'one gun does everything' gun.

My friend has recommended 870 express at the begining. 870 is a nice gun, lot of after marker stuff can play arround. But I am a lefty. When I talking with my local gunshop, BPS has been introduced. Bottom ejection, better quality... then I am refocused to BPS... until yesterday...

My buddy took me to his club. Lots of senior pros playing trap/skeet there, most of them using O/U. I am doing well with my friend's Stoeger semi, didn't even a single miss on the first 10 shots. I said to myself:" I love this game!"

Now comes the problem. I understand pump gun is not a ideal choice for trap and skeet. I will also do some goose hunting (maybe one or two times a year)I have two choice:

1, Buy a mid-range O/U or semi. (beretta or browning)
2, Buy a BPS for hunting and another older model 2nd hand O/U with fixed chock maybe non-steel bll

Personally I like O/U more then Semi.

Need your experience please.

Thanks a lot

Leo, another semi-auto for a lefty is a left-hand Remington 11-87 Premiere. They are reliable, inexpensive, and fairly versatile. Also 3"-capable, so can be used on those geese as well.

My road to shotgunning started a little more than 40 years ago with a Remington 870 pump. Still have one in the rack I use for waterfowling,
as well as a Beretta SxS with Kent Impact non-tox loads. Between my first shotgun and the seven now in the cabinet, there have been many
( maybe too many ... naw !) others, including Wincester 1300's, several 101's, 12's & 42's and a SX-1, Remington 58's, 1100's and 11-87's, Browning 325 and 425's, Classic Doubles, Ithaca Doubles, Browning & Beretta SxS's, and Beretta O/U's. Also shot a good many other guns a fair bit including Perazzi MX-8's, MT6's & Mirage's, a couple of Kreighoff's, a Kolar & a Blaser F3.

For waterfowling, a full camo Remington 870 Express ... about $ 600
brand new.

If an autoloader, I concur a new Beretta 391. ... about $ 1400

If an O/U, probably a good used Browning Citori ... 325, 425. 525 or XS
doesn't much matter. Most important criteria is that it fit you and
that it is preferably a 30" barrel. You'll be in the $ 1750 - $ 2000 range.

All of the above will have interchangeable choke tubes.

Any combination of pump & O/U will or pump & semi- auto will do you well for a good many years for what you've described.

Save your money

If your just starting, save your money till you know what direction you want to go with shotgun shooting. I have two I use, A 1950 Browning Superposed Lightning in 12 ga. Worth maybe $700. Fixed choke full/mod. I use if for trap mostly but still can hit 24/25 at skeet. The one I bought a year ago is an old Remington 1100 for $300 borrowed a skeet barrell while my barrell was being fitted with screw in chokes, I have one skeet choke and one mod. Won the doubles event last yr. with this gun against a very experienced shooter, my gun was $300 rem. his was a $4000 Custom Browning. Doesn't matter what you shoot if it works reliably and most of all IT HAS TO FIT YOU.
Buy a cheap gun till you know what you specifically want to shoot and spend the extra money and buy a shotshell reloader to keep up with your practice.
The first 10,000 are only practice :runaway:
Good luck:D

Til you decide the direction you wish to go, I would skip the loading as well. Federal Top Gun and Winchester Super Targets Loads are cheap enough when bought by the flat, to make reloading not much of a saving.

Wow, This is very valuable advise!!!
Again, appreciate from the bottom of my heart. I visited 2 clubs in GTA - Sharon and Galt, found Galt is very friendly for clay sporting. Anyone shooting there? I need friends and fellows.
