It is a 1952 Tula arsenal SKS. It has chrome linen barrel, good overall condition.

MNM44, Another good looker! Feel better by bringing your SKS to the range and put a few rounds of corrosive ammo through her. Enjoy!!!

I too just got my first. It's from Moving target, unissued. The service from Ed at Moving Target is awesome.

I'm partial to brake cleaner to remove cosmo .... Just soak all the metal bits, shake them around, brush off and you're done. The gas cylinder is the only fiddly bit I find.

Nice, I got a '54 Tula. That sure is nicer than my first SKS. It was one of those Norinco ones made for the civilian market. Man was it crap fit and finish. Went bang every time though.

What should i use to remove the cosmoline? brake cleaner, WD-40 or Valsol.

You can use either Simple Green or Ed's Red. (you make it the recipe is here) Simple Green is not poisonous and won't dry out your hands.

Brake cleaner will work too. You can use Kerosene but it has "oil" in it so you'll have to use Simple Green afterwards.

WD-40 not so much. The key is "degreaser."

Chemicals, soaking, smell....Why bother?....Buy a small portable steam cleaner (60-70 bucks).....Strip it down and use the pressurized steam to melt the cosmoline away.....You can get into every nook and cranny, and since it heats the metal, it dries in no time....Far, far easier than other methods....And it has other uses as well....

Wow, I never thought of that! I thought these steamers didn't shoot out liquid water only vapor. Do you have a brand or a place you bought it?

so far all the russians are in oil and not cosmo so a little of varsol is needed. matter of fact i just wipe the exterior with a cloth only.

Yep, no cosmo on mine, just oil. Just stripped her down and wiped off the oil. Did need to strip the bolt and blow out the firing pin channel with brake cleaner followed by a pipe cleaner though. It was gummed up.
