Getting late in the year and I was starting to think it wasn't meant to be. Seen this Tom and a Jake last week, strutting away out of range. They gave me and three hens that where 10 yards from me quit a show. But, they never came in close and I went home.
Fast forward to now. Set up by 5 am, hounded by a flock of mosquitoes from my car all the way in. Tucked my head down and didn't move until most had moved on ensuring I would have enough blood to make it out. The birds begin to chirp, but no Turkeys gobble. I wait, not moving for fear of mosquitoes... I give a little call, a distant gobble emerges. There's one hear... I wait 15-20 minutes, silence. I call again, and again a distant answer. I wait 15 more minutes, nothing. Ouch, a mosquito digs deep into my left ear brow. I raise my hand and squish it. As my hand hits my brow I spy a Turkey 150 yards to my left. It dashes straight back into the bush from where it came. Did it see me? I don't know so there I sit. A few minutes later a turkey emerges 300 yards away at the far end of the trees where I seen the last. It dances across the field out of sight. From the same bush line three others emerge and slowly, painstakingly slowly make there way towards me. I strain to see a beard, but they are still to far away.
Suddenly I hear leaf litter behind to my right. Squirrel? Chipmunk? Turkey? It's a Jake, walks out 5 yards to my right, heading to the rear of my decoy. I bring up my mossberg, put the sights on him when my heart begins to beat a little faster, a Tom has walked out right behind him, his beard swaying like a pendulum. I adjust my target and successfully completed my day at 6:30. I can't wait for next time!

Congrats on the nice bird. I here ya about the dang mosquitoes, was out Thursday am. I will be having tag soup this year as I plan to go to the range instead of the bush. Although the bush is a lot cheaper on ammo.

I guess I forgot the weight! He came in a tad over 19 lbs. His crop was empty. I heard it's common for these guys to drop a few pounds in the spring? Someone said opening day he would have been around 23 lbs or so.

fuse, nice big bird. We shoot alot of birds here spring and fall(geese) and I have to say I envy my southern fellow CGNer's when I read posts/pics like this about turkey hunting as I'd love to bang a few of them up to eat. Cheers fuse,
