My GF decided last year she wanted to take up hunting so she took her PAL course & her hunter safety. She had gone with me a few times a couple summers ago shooting gophers with a .22 and really enjoyed it and really took to shooting VERY WELL!! I watched her dispatch 9 gophers with one 10rd mag offhand at distances between 50 to 90 yards so when she expressed interest in more I gladly seized the opportunity. Fast forward to this summer and my being able to get back on the ranges after my knee replacement and she decided she had best learn shotgunning if she was to be able to hit ducks & geese this fall.
A friend lent her a gun, a Browning Silver Hunter Micro 20ga to see if it fit as she has a short reach and my guns are too much LOP for her and sure enough it worked.
After a few minutes of instruction on proper stance, gun mount, hold points etc she took to it like a duck to water.
Once she learns the leads and timing she'll likely do well.
She holds and handles the gun like a natural so we ordered her a new Winchester SX4 Compact camo version for the upcoming season. In the video she is using our friends Browning.
This was her first attempt at trap as a full regulation round, the first time I locked the trap on straightaways and had her stand on station 3 and just shoot singles of which she hit half.
This time she wanted to go it alone after having me walk her through the stations and show her the hold points. She also shot a round of skeet with us and broke 5/25, funny enough 3 of those came from the middle 3 stations. I figure she isn't doing bad for never having fired a shotgun in her life except for 3 rounds last year at a stationary target. She said on the way home she preferred the trap range. I have a feeling a trap gun will be in the works for next spring.
Looks like I have a new trap/skeet and waterfowl partner. :dancingbanana:

Here is a short video of her attempting her second round of trap.

Good work, Frank ... always a good thing when you bring a new shooter into the fold.

Thanks Bill. We stopped in at the Saskatoon Gun Club the weekend before last on our way home from MB to watch the provincial championships. She was quite surprised by the number of women shooters and I think that has helped to generate alot of interest in the trap shooting. She went around talking with a few of the women shooters and went away feeling alot less intimidated to get involved. I'm hoping she'll feel more confident with more practice enough so that she'll want to shoot registered shoots together.

It's always great seeing women getting into the shooting sports and trap needs all the help it can get to stay alive!
My wife has shot trap and sporting for several years now and has always done pretty good at it but she hasn't really dedicated much time to it until this year. She's shooting much more this year than before and has had a couple of lessons which have really helped. She's really pushing me now on the trap line but still has a ways to go at sporting before I feel threatened...... maybe I'll start to make her pay for her own targets and shells if that happens!

Thats awesome!! my daughter shot trap for the first time a couple months ago. she ended up shooting 3 rounds by the end of the day. Between her and my son shooting i only managed to shoot 2 myself lol. my wife does come shooting sometimes but she has no interest in hunting; my daughter however will be joining me this year!!

My 21 year old daughter loves shooting trap. We have half a dozen women that shoot trap at our club on and off and one who shoots in competition. Shootign sports are one of the few sports that women can compete head to head with men on equal footing. Unfortunately, there are still a few old coots around that think a women's place is in the kitchen.

It's awesome when a human gives themselves the chance at even more empowerment, confidence, and knowledge then they already possess. And in turn someone gives there time, patience, and passion to pass on a feeling that one can only experience by doing! :)

Getting more women involved in clay target shooting is a sure fire way to grow the sport.

Imagine the inner hour conversation.

Woman: Hey honey, a few of us girls are going down to the range after dinner to shoot some clays, why don't you come along.

Man, naw, I think I will just have a few beers and watch TV.

Woman, well don't get too comfortable, if you are going to be home anyway, take out the garbage, mow the lawn and clean the toilets.

Man, I'll get my shotgun.

As a women who loves to shoot anything she can get her hands on skeet is still the hardest for me but the most fun when u break that clay what a rush

Good for both of you. You are introducing her to the sport perfectly. Start with a soft-shooting gun, put her in a target situation for lots of success, and then gradually increase the difficulty as she feels she's ready. That's a great recipe for all to follow.

PS I would only add, because I have no idea what kind of a shooter you are, is ensure that she is learning proper technique right from the start. Have an instructor or known good shooter at the club review what she's doing.

At our home club I have been the one coaching her and a few other beginners. When we get to where there are some experienced women shooters such as when stopped off at the SK provincial shoot I suggested she watch some of the lady shooters and approach them and ask questions if they were willing to answer some. I find the women shooters can often give a little different insight on technique etc over us guys. I would consider myself an accomplished shooter having at one time been a AA class singles and 27 yards handicap shooter with a couple top ten finishes at the Grand American in my prime. Now I'm just a has been but having fun still and hoping my gf gleans something from my coaching to help her learn the game.

Good for you! It's great to see and a great feeling when you introduce someone new to the world of shooting. Especially so when you can bring more women and kids into the predominantly male sport. Every one we can get into it is one less misguided gun control supporter and slowly ending the stigma that has developed towards gun ownership.

AWESOME STUFF !!! Congrats !

Nothing any better than introducing someone new to the shooting sports...esp women !
We got my DIL hooked on sporting clays late last summer, she loved it so much, she insisted on going when it was -25 with the wind chill last winter...so cold the semi auto 20 was hesitant a few times...lol ...gawwd luv her...she just kept calling "PULL"
