I've got what started as a 30" Douglas 1.2" bull barrel. She's a great shooter but I'd like to lighten her up. I am aware that the school of thought in regards to longer barrels being more accurate has changed. I've seen 18" guns shooting out to 1000. When I first built her I had dreams of getting to 1000 on a regular basis but one then two and now three kids are around so I really don't care about 1000 any more. How short should I chop her? Her pet load is 175g sierras with 44.6 of varget.

308win with 20 is plenty for 1000meter, you can chop the barrel, reinstalled you brake and still look great.

I wouldn't cut the barrel more than 6" for a total lenght of 24" + brake of course. Additional thinning of it would be possible starting let's say 3" from the front of the action it could be stepped to 1-1/8" and tapered to 15/16" at the muzzle with some optional flutting that rig would be as rigid, up to 2lbs ligter, handier and look awesome. Velocity loss with slower burning powders up to 100-125fps would be minimal even less with faster ones.

even taking 6 inches off the barrel im sure would make a significant difference personal preference of a little longer than 20" barrels id say 24" looks best

That is a massively impressive magazine. Where do I get one? :D

The DBM is a Wyatts Outdoor. It might not be as heavy duty as some others but from what I could find it allows the longest length of cartridge 2.880.

The kind of job you talking about for this gun would require a bank loan, good luck!

Ah. It also appears to be a single stack, which is unfortunate. I was personally hoping that it's length would make it a 15-20 rounder. It certainly looks as long as a 20rd Fal or DPMS magazine. However, still a very nice rig you've got there. She's definitely as plus size model, but I imagine the performance is top notch.

One thing to think of is if your brake was threaded on and the ID finished after, it may not go on as straight after you have it choped and rethreaded. If its clamped on it should be the same as was.

Maybe its time to hit the weights so she doesn't feel so heavy. It may not live up to your expectations after the chop!! You might be sorry.

Well, if you talking about machine shop rate of $100+/hour then yes that loan would be in order. For machinist with acces to lathe and milling machine working in his spare time all that could be done for let's say $350 or so, no bank loan needed. IF the barrel had substantial amount of rounds passed thru it (say more than 20000) then cutting 6" off of the chamber side and rechambering it would make it virtually brand new barrel....

You can try fluting the barrel, but would that run the risk of stressing the metal or adversly screwing with the harmonics/accuracy??

For heavy barrels with milling cutter run slow and with lots of coolant there would be no additional stress what so ever. You can order fluted target barrel from Shilen, Shaw and others for additional $ of course with no loss of accuracy. I fluted lots of them even 1/2 a doz or so for Mick Mcphee without a problem and many of his customers know how strict he is about quality. Yes, most run of the mill factory barrels under 3/4" dia at muzzle don't take the flutting well b/c they (hammer forged mostly) are not stress relieved as good to start with.
