Went gopher hunting this afternoon with a group of friends in SW Saskatchewan. We hit an elk pasture and found the mother load. We didn't move from the one spot for 3 hours... and the only reason we left is because the wind hit 60km/hr. The sun was out, about 15 degrees, the odd cloud, and we even stopped for a quick barbeque on a little portable grill.

We must have shot at least 500 gophers in that field and we have plans to go back tomorrow.

I used my Mossberg .22 while my Savage 12fv .243 was cooling. Man is that Savage accuracte and fun to shoot at the little ground pigs.

Anyone else planning on hitting the fields this weekend?

man i gotta ask....i'm from NB and i see the ODD gopher here...is there really that many damn gophers out there?!? i read all the gopher shooting threads and it sounds like a blast!!! i guess i just can't imagine setting up on the same field the whole day and having the much success? some rich folks fly across continents to shoot elephants and lions...but #### i'd fly across canada to have a go at those gophers - you lads make that sound like a blast!!!

Went out with 4 other guys last Aug for the first time in years. In the course of one day I personally shot about 120 gophers myself with my .204 and .22
The total take for the day was between 600 and 700 gophers (Spaced out over 3 fields) between the 5 of us. We only stopped cause the heat of the day was keeping the little buggers underground.
We also stopped for a BBQ out the back of one of the trucks.

Looking forward to the long weekend in May coming up...same 5 guys going on a 4 day *Safari* to Southern Ab, maybe over to Swift Curret area in South Sask.
Guns I'm taking,
2 - .22 semis with HiCap mags
1 - .204 *26" Varmint barrel*
1 - .223 *26" Varmint barrel*
1 - 12Ga. HiCap shotty (for the closeup stupid ones)

i've been so tempted to go out. My place has tons of them but they arent really hurting anything right now. I'll wait til all the babies are born and out and about before i bust out the 17hmr and .223. Why shoot 20 now when I can shoot 300 in late summer :) can't wait

As kids in SW MB ( with only a single shot .22 and a box of shorts ) we used to wait until 2 or 3 of the young ones were "lined up" to see how many we could get with one shot - never managed more than 3 and that didn't happen often. Used to be some hot spots in the pastures / hay fields along the Pipestone valley south of Fleming. Kayceel

We try the "3 for 1" shots as well but we use the centre fires for that. I used some 95gr Bergers for those shots, they just go right through as if nothing was in their way.

65gr Vmax the rest of the time.

For those that have never done it... we are not pulling your legs. You can take over a thousand in a day if you have enough guys and enough land. We could have hit 5 other pastures but why move when they just keep coming.

Do the fields fill up with Buzzards and coyotees the day after 500 corpses are left there?

I can't even imagine groundhogd like that, I'm definatly in the wrong province.

a single person can shoot 1000+ in a day in the right target rich environment
i've gone out with one friend and 8 bricks and at the end of the day had less than a brick left, with around a 90% hit ratio (my friend was close to the same)...
those are special occasions on overrun sections but they are the days you never forget....
