Hey guys, thought I'd post up a pic of my 12ga. Used to be gramps' gun, gave it to me a few years ago. I haven't done anything but skeet with it so far, so basically I'm just getting to know it. Been sitting at dads place for a long while since my FAC expired ages ago. Heading in to re do my training and take the test next month so I can take it home finally. Before I had these pics I didn't know exactly what model it was and I used to think it was a Savage 67F, as I didn't have many opportunities to have a look at it.

Well here it is. anybody else have one of these? Stevens / Savage arms 820B. Not worth a whole lot really, but it seems to be reliable, I understand there was a trench model like this made for prison guards on the chain gangs. This one was probably made around 1950 or so from what I've gathered. What do you think?

Your 820B morphed into the Savage 67 series in the very late 1950's I believe. Previous to the 820B the Savage line included the 520/620 series. These were often used as military and guard shotguns. The 67 series saw action in Viet Nam as a fighting shotgun. The 820B was never manufactured as a law enforcement shotgun. (remember with Savage never say never)Some may have been converted to a law enforcement shotgun after initial purchase. Some 820B had an adjustable collet type choke called a Super Choke. It is solid frame meaning the barrel is screwed into the frame and does not take down. The mag tube can be removed for cleaning. They were well made shotguns that were priced in the economy bracket. My 1953 Stoeger catalogue prices the 820 at 59.00 compared to a Winchester model 12 at 93.00. The gun was always a 12 bore no other gauges were offered. Most if not all had very nice straight grain walnut. Always better than most walnut you see today. Decent old gun that parts are still around for. It is not suitable for use with steel shot if it is choked FULL it was offered with the choice of IMP CYL MOD or FULL fixed chokes.

I have one...solid gun. They will pump-slam fire too...like the old Ithaca 37, Winchester model 97 & model 12. Just hold the trigger and pump away!
I cut the barrel to 20" and installed screw in chokes. Part of my regular rotation of riot guns.
 
Time for the dime test I guess. So just to clarify: Would it be okay to shoot steel shot if it's a cylinder bore?
If I can't take the thing out bird hunting around water, I might as well buy something else that can take the steel shot. Then remove the plug from the magazine and just have fun with it.
 
My first repeating shotgun was an 820B with the adjustable choke. Bought it used over fifty years ago.
If you want to shoot steel out of it, have a gunsmith ream the choke to open it up a bit.
