dear death-junkie

death-junky: how about you buy a real hunting rifle????

I think you'll learn that a "real" hunting rifle is any rifle that "performs faithfully and consistantly" for exactly that purpose. Your 19, that's 2 less than the deer I've shot between my SKS, mauser and Enfield. IMHO, dont be one of those hunters who thinks, the more money you spend, the more success you'll have. I've never paid more than 150.00 for any of my guns. Been hunting since 12 with s**t guns, for everything from grouse to bear to caribou and have yet to come home skunked or loose an animal.

However, I do envy those guys with the magnum rifles. Stricktly for the cool factor of magnum kick and power. Dont forget though, shot placement is what matters most.:D

Thanks for your comment though!! LOL:rockOn:

I started out the same way, with milsurps and all. They do the job required of them. My passion these days is my Mathews bow, T/C Encore(209x.50,.300WM), Pedersolli .50cal Frontier rifle and my Lyman GPR in .50 as well.
My .308 & 30-30 are family hierlooms so they see rare action.
I've recently caught the 12g shotgun slug "bug" too!

Welcome aboard Josh! Nothing wrong with your choices there! I love both my full wood mil-surps and those that have been sporterized (not by me though!). I can't recall the number of moose and caribou I've taken with any of my .303 British Lee-Enfields, 6.5X55mm Swede & .30-06 even though I've got lots of "real" hunting rifles as Riley kidded about. Your Lee-Enfield looks pretty nice in the pic, I guess "Bubba" knew what he was doing when he cut that one down. I wouldn't feel undergunned with that rifle in my hands hunting anywhere in North American...I'd probably have a full ten rounds in the mag if I was taking on a Kodiak though!:)

yah, I actually wish i could afford "proper' examples of the Enfield and Mauser ,
I would never cut down one of these beauties myself. But, damage is done and now they have a good home, and get used for something usefull. I did purchase new wood and metal for the mauser, to make it close to original. I love shooting it the way it is so maybe I'll just keep the "furniture" put away for now. Dont run into big bears here, only black bears up to about 325 lbs.

I also have a bow (Pse Bruin) and it is also my new obsession., havnt shot anything but targets with it!! so far.

As i mentioned, I do envy you guys with the large cal's. and magnums, I want a gun which could comfortably take "anything". Any recommondations??

:welcome:

My first hunting rifle was a Cooey Mod 71 in .270 Winchester. My uncle gave it to me as an incentive to finish high school.

A trusty $100 milsurp is just as effective as $4000 Custom BLAH BLAH with a bedded WATCHAMACALLIT & crowned THINGY within most hunting conditions.;)

The main exception being is that you are not physically sick to your stomach when you scratch stock crossing a barbwire fence.:puke: :bangHead:

and here is my collection...

It's sure nice to see rifles with history that are still out making new memories. :)

Your enfield will likely deal with, and they have dealt with, most anything in North America. There are of course better choices available for some of the bigger critters, as you suggest. Are you looking for something with history, such as a 45/70, or a stainless/synthetic .750superduperwhizzbangsatteliteblaster type of setup?

I definitly enjoy firearms with history. no point in corrupting my collection now with a ".750 whizbanger"!! LOL. I dont know much about the 45/70. Sounds cool though!!

The 45/70 Government is very commonly used for defence against Grizzlies and such. It can launch a .45 cal 500 grain slug which you can be sure will be capable of taking anything on this continent. It can be loaded with much lighter weight bullets as well, for a flatter trajectory if hunting deer, or simply for plinking without destroying your shoulder.

It's very popular in the lever guns, including the marlin guide gun with 18.5" barrel. It's not a long range caliber though, 200 yards is about the limit most people use it to.

The problem is that the older firearms that were chambered in this caliber can't take the high pressures required in order to take full advantage of the 45/70. The #1 Ruger seems to take the best advantage of it.

The caliber itself has lots of history, but you might need to go with a rifle that is more modern than your enfield. :)
