I spent today with a good friend (a real butcher) resiting a high seat to cover a 200 yard break along the middle of a wood. I wrote about this wood a couple of months back when discussing wild boar calibres. I sited the seat over some bait in april when it was really hot but the greenery hadnt risen. I went back about a month later and whoah could I see anything? I wanted to put down some apples and nuts but I couldnt see 10 yards when a month before I had over 100 yards of clearview. I decided to move the seat. Sciatica and a new job got in the way so today was the first chance. I took 4 of my dogs and my friend brought his cocker for the run out.
It was persisting down, I havent seen rain like this all year yrt it was still warm, Nettles were 4 foot high and thistles well over 6 foot.
We put the seat up at 15 foot against an old oak with a good view for about 200 yards one way and about 70 everywhere else. That should please my stalker. I may now put out 50 yard markers and put apples on the clearing to see if the boar will come.
I have to return to put a health and safety warning notice on the seat despite it being private land (a public footpath crosses 25 yards in front and below the seat) so I may do that then.
Anyway back to the story, I was showing Chris around the scrapes and antler scratch posts when I stood on this:
A cast Fallow antler, it has been chewed, presumably by the deer as the gnawing marks are on one side only for the calcium content, but it at least proves that we have Fallow Bucks in the area and large old ones at that!
Roll on August and we can shoot him as well as the Roebucks we were keeping an eye out for!
