It began with a Canada Ammo M305 shorty. Out of the box it seemed like a great rifle, but being new to the platform and chinese clones I wasn't %100 percent comfortable shooting it due to safety concerns. So I sent it off to the man formerly known as the M14Doctor to have it checked and accurized. Then I happened to see an ad for the Springfield M1A's at Wanstalls and couldn't resist ( I told the girlfriend it was my "registry is dead" rifle - did not tell her the price! ). Gary hooked me up with a Standard M1A ( headspace 1.631 ) with a walnut stock that I have since added a flash hider with bayo lug. Then I just had to have a bayonet ( nib 1966 ), Vietnam era sling ( according to ebay seller ) and a few spare mags. I recieved my M305 ( headspace 1.638 ) back early this week and added my Springfield muzzle brake. I can't get enough of shooting these rifles, I enjoy shooting offhand and I it seems like I can't miss! I'll be using these for hunting this year. Every deer I've ever shot has been with a Win 94 30-30, so this will be a new experience for me.

Thanks to Canada Ammo, Gary at Wanstalls, Thomas ( M14Doc ) and The Shooting Edge! I'm planning to go shoot on Sunday so I'll add a range report with more pics

My next project will be an LRB M25 Tanker

The internet has decided that AE 308 ammo in the M1A rifles isn't a good idea, check some of the other threads, you might be blown away with what you find hyuk

i thought AE ammo was bad to reload. i hope thats the case because i bought over 1000rounds of AE. btw nice guns and share some of those mags they're hard to find.

Pfff, you'll be fine with the AE ammo. Fine to reload it too . . . IF you know what you're doing. Based on what I've seen of the recent AE/M305 incident there is a lot more too it then the ammo.

You seem to know what your headspace is, that alone suggests to me you observe your rifles with enough attention to detail to assure their safe use. That's more then others know about their rifles that have probably blown 1000's of rounds of AE without incident. Hell, I couldn't tell you the headspace on my M305, but I can tell you that every single round I reloaded for them passed GO before I loaded them.

Well, at the risk of taking heat from some folks.... Which I don't really give rats ass about LOL

I'm gonna tell you guys to stay away from American Eagle ammo in your chinese rifles.
But what do I know eh?
I only spend EVERY day immersed in the M14, it's my job.
Of the issues I've documented on case failures and ammo issues.... No other brand fails on the books as much as AE , in these rifles.

It's a safety concern, and it has been admitted by federal themselves that AE is a poor choice for semi auto actions due to it's thinner case walls.

It's budget ammo, in the end YOU decide if you want to take that risk.
Me... I value my vision, my face in general and any other part of my body that could be injured in the case of an event. I also value my rifles so shoot the best ammo I can afford.
For liability reasons we test fire with commercial ammo only, and when we do it is allways federal power shok 150gr SP. Never have had any issues with it in THOUSANDS of rounds in 100's of chinese rifles.
Play safe kids, a Kaboom in your rifle is not worth the money you saved buying cheap ammo that has been known to fail from time to time in semi autos (just ask federal)

Do you consider RUAG MFS ammo to be a safe choice? My previous post about Norc ammo was meant to be a bit sarcastic, but it seems like other operators are using it with no issue. Can you give a source for where you buy your ammo? I notice you mention chinese rifles, but what about Springfields? ( a lot of questions, but I value your knowledge )

I would say this as an an amendment to my statements on this ammo in chinese rifles.
I should correct that.
I won't use it in any semi personally. With the exception of the 223/556 stuff, a great many guys I know shoot AE in their AR's n such and seem to have no issues. I have a stash of it myself.
If you MUST shoot AE, I would suggest, as my personal opinion only, that you inspect the fired brass and primer every once in a while to look for potential issues.

I've shot lots of MFS and most of the "surplus" on the market and the only stuff I won't put in my semi's is AE. I do run AE on occasion thru my bolt gun (has 1.635) headspace and zero issues.

My experience with AE is limited and Im no expert so this is just a laymans opinion.
I put one box of 20 rounds thru my Norc and had to stand on the op rod to eject 4 rounds out of the 20. I know this wasnt a system problem cos I stripped her down on the bench and put three boxes of Fed and Remington thru her after rebuilding it.
My buddy and I would swear that the rounds that jammed were , or seemed significantly louder than the others and as I was shooting I felt as though the jammed rounds had more kick than the rest. I should have kept the brass but I tossed it all cos Im not buying or using AE in the Norc again. And the groups were all over the place.
Just an Old Farts opinion so all you "experts " dont bother dismantling my terminology or telling me I cant have done something right or failed to maintain me gun.
So thats my experience with AE...take it or leave it..me ....Im leaving it well alone :)

I just had no idea AE .308 causes these issues in Chinese M-14's. I was thinking about buying a 500 round bulk pack at one point, sometimes there are some pretty good deals on AE. I noticed Fishing World in The Hammer has bulk packs of 500 brass cased, Boxer primer S&B .308 for $329. Does anyone have an opinion on this S&B ammo in their M-14's?
