My M14 gas cylinder is a little loose now. It was tight when I got it.

Should I care? It still works fine and is accurate enough for me (1-2")

Will it just get worse or what?

It would bother me knowing that it wasn't as good as it should be, but if it doesn't bother you then you don't need to worry about it. It's very easy to shim (if your flashhider isn't welded on) so I'd suggest just going ahead and doing it for the satisfaction of it.

See if it is loose forward and back, or if there is a little wobble from side to side as well. Side to side movement can be stopped with a couple of taps on the splines with your hammer. Sounds scary to be taking a hammer to your gas system, but it's easy.

Have you been a good boy and got the dvd set from Hungry yet?

All of the USGI M14's I've owned, competed with, and accurized had sloppy gas cylinder assemblies. THAT is normal. What did you expect from a battle rifle?

The Norc M14's are all great by USGI standards of sloppy gas cylinders.

Shimming and a few taps with a ball peen hammer on your splines (3 of them) will solve this problem. You are just dimpling the splines, that's all. Have a look at my M14 Clinic CD set (2004 Abbotsford Clinic) and I carry out this mod, I believe.

Cheers,
Barney
