Hello all!!

I have had some requests, and thought I would post some pictures of my second M-14 build (my First is My M305 DMR project).

As stated previously, One of the most exciting developments for the M-14 platform has been the Black feather chassis system, in conjunction with the CasM optics mount.

Finally there is a solid, repeatable solution for mounting conventional optics. The only down side is you have to be “alright” with the lost of the rear sight, as the rear of the optic mount sits in the rear sight pocket. This gives it, its solidness. Couple that with a light, ridged, and affordable chassis system, and I think you have a real winner.

I got together with a smith friend of mine, and we started to chat about the possibility of building a Multi-Purpose Shorty style battle rifle.

As previously, the aim of this project was to

-change only those parts that offered the greatest amount of value for the dollars spent (IE spring guide, muzzle treatment etc)

-retain as many of the original parts as possible, and simply tune them for optimum performance.

The following is the fruit of the mentioned discussion. Its not quite in its final configuration (need optics) but its close enough that I thought I would share some pictures.

Specs include:

  • M305 - 18.6"
  • Black feather Chassis FDE
  • CASM optics mount - FDE
  • Handguard painted to match
  • Black Arrow Spring Guide
  • Hungry Tuned Trigger group (ever so sweet!!)
  • Magpul MIAD FDE with B1 back strap
  • Magpul UBR (FDE - with side pannels removed)
  • Springfield Armoury M1A Muzzle break
  • Sadlak M14 Mag Release Latch (Foreign 4mm Pin)
  • SEI M14 Extended Bolt Stop/Release

There was one foble with this project. Durring its extensive tuning, my smith discovered that the barrrel was ever so slightly out of index, but the sights were aligned correctly and the rifle functioned so well the smith decided to leave it as is. (To ensure proper function, my smith tested it throughly, and with permision, used it to compete in an informal match with it. He took second out of 10 seasoned shooters.)

All this being said, to date I have not really had a chance to shoot her in earnest.

Pictures as follows. I will do my best to answer any questions you might have, and I look forward to any constructive comments you might have

regards and all the best

if scope broke, you will just have a harpoon in your hand :(

no sense mount for me, but if you like it , enjoy !

no more rear sight. why remove the best sight ever made ?

it' not a taget rifle , just buy any cheap bolt action, it will be better....

it' a gun for action :)

Good mount with QD

It's a Norinco :runaway:

Did yer #### fall off yet?

ha ha ha ha ha

I'm just jealous. That's a fine looking build! :D

Cheers,
Barney

PS: Bring it to Non- Restricted CQB clinic in Longview

Thank you all for the Cudo's

As for how she shoots, well I have to take her out and give he a good work out, so I will let you know how that goes.

I bought a couple of creates of that Norico 7.62x51 ammo, and that is what I plan to feed this one. That way I can shoot rapidly (read CQB) and not have to worry about policing brass.

Barney:

Well one Polytech (22"DMR), One Norinco (the shorty you see above), both in Black feather chassis.

I just checked and all seems to be firmly attached in place. So no "#### Loss" as this time. (but it does have one of your trigger groups!! :) )

I built this one spesifically with that clinic in mind.

I have an X300 scout light I want to add, a forgrip of some kind, and an optic.

For the Clinic I am thinking Red dot (something like an Aimpoint Micro), but I am not convinced that is the permanent optic.

I tried a C-79 Elcan, but the eye releif is not right, so I was thinking 1-4 or 2-10 or something like that.

So many choices, so little time.

All the best

Regards

Nice touch on the hand guard paint job. It's details like that that make things come together well. I will have a sling swivel set for Blackfeather available via the web site this week. This set includes two steel insert cups and two 1 1/4" quick detach sling swivels. Very heavy duty parts. It looks like that, a good sling and optic is all that is missing to complete her. Good to see some photos this Sunday evening! Cheers, Frank

Edited: I added the sling swivel set to the web site today. Here is the link.
