Special thanks to Claven2 and Steve1973. Both gave great advice over the past few months...taken me a while to finally get this done.

This is the before (taken months ago when I first started)

This is after treating the stock to some Isopronanol (used 1 whole bottle). No oil put on wood yet, that's why it's so dull.

Regular oil applied to stock. What a difference!

Final product. Looks smashing. Austrian 660 code (little bit of a rare code), renumbered Kar 98k. Just need to find an Austrian bayonet some time and I'm set.

Alls I dids is slop some Isopropanol on zee stock, and zen I wiped off with zee rag. When I was done this, I used my fingernail to scratch off the parts that simply wouldn't come off (about an hours worth of scratching) and then oiled up the stock.

Raw linseed oil hand rubbed is probably the best choice or a laminate stocked mauser.
Uhh...my gun's done, isn't it? I thought there was a BLO finish on there already? I thought that when the stock was dull like that, that was the german BLO sitting there without any oil? Should I have put a new layer of BLO on before I oiled the stock? :(

BLO = Boiled Linseed Oil. Raw linseen oil is slightly better on laminate stocks b/c they are very dense and raw oil stays wet a little longer so it has more opportunity to seep in :) BLO is the same as raw linseed oil except with chemical dryers added.

Am I too late? I already put a layer of oil over the BLO German finish. Or can I still put the RLO over top of the stock as it is now?

great looking stock

Hey guys

I'm new here. I've been lurking for months and decided to finally post something.
I just picked up my RC K98 from SIR yesterday, yes I was one of the ones who had a backorder, weeee! I read the one post enquiring about them and wanting pics and serial numbers so I will post more about it there. But basically the stock looks much the same as yours seemed to in your before picture. I would very much like to know how you cleaned it up, what you used, and the oil you used to finish is off. That is what I want mine to look like once I get all the crud and frickin shellac off! :)
Please, any info would be very welcome!

Very nice stock again, and nice to finally make contact with you guys ;)

Aeron98, first of all welcome!
First off, you're going to want to get a rag. And then go to the drug store such as Pharmasave and get "Isopropanol". Don't get Isopropyl Alcohol, because it's 70% USP. Which isn't what you want.

Then start pouring it on to the stock, and rubbing it off violently. Let it sit in the trouble spots for 10 seconds or so if you're having difficulty with that spot. Just rub it out while it's still wet. You might need two bottles of the stuff, it's not expensive though. After the Shellac is off, you'll either use regular gun oil (just regualr oil basically) and oil up the stock as I did, or add raw linseed oil as Claven2 has expertly suggested.

I still haven't learned if I should be adding RLO to my already oiled stock yet, though...

thanks

Thanks, I'll give it a try.
Just by cleaning with a wet rag, I can see the nice wood underneath all that black and brown shellac.

I'll have to take some pics to document the whole process.

Not too late. If you wnt to add more linseed finish, just do as Longbranch* suggests and cut the first few coats with turmentine, perhaps 30% or so of turpentine to the mix.
