My Mosin shoots high... what can I do to fix it?

I got testing that Mosin 91/30... nice shooter, but I have to put two 11x8 papers on top of each other.... and aimig at the base... I'm barely on the paper... @ top :runaway:
What can I do?
The rifle shoots pretty good, but waaay high, even with moderate reloads.
Please help :D

If you're adjusting the rear sight for distance, that might be a problem. Many of the 91's and possibly the 91/30's used the Russian archin [sp] and not yards for their sight measurement so that might be a problem if you're thinking in yards. If you have adjusted it to that, try to bring it back a notch. That's all I could think of.

I would have liked to have an adjustable one, like mojo, but it is so far form the original sight, it ruins the feel for me. If I'll be hunting with it, or just plain shooting, I'd like to have it as close to the original.

I miss some of the tools described in the surplusrifle, so I took it to "my" gunsmith. He said he'll do something nicer... we'll see.

try to mount the bayonet,
and if that doesn't help file gently, the bottom portion of rear sight to compensate it.
Take a file with you to the range and try it, go slow and gently.

I was thinking about filing some, but I'm talking about 15" @ 100yds. I have to file quite a bit to achieve that.
The bayonet thing came back into my mind when you guys mentioned it, about the russians not being allowed to use them in a competition, back in the day, bu while it is nice to do at the range, I love hunting with milsurp rifles, and I bet MNR will frown at the pointy thing.

I took it to the gunsmith, and he called back.... is done! Now I have to wait till Monday...

Attaching bayonet or filing rear sight.....go on!

I can't believe that anyone would think that a bayonet attached could make a 14-16 inch difference at 100 yards. I don't know these rifles but have experienced similar problems with all military rifles from the mid to late 1800's regardless of country of origin. They were made to shoot high, coming back on target at 200 - 300 yards. A higher front sight is the answer. If the sight is dovetailed on then just add a higer one and try it. A quarter inch higher sight makes a whopping difference in POI at 100 yards. To find the proper height just take a piece of thin aluminum and cut it to the shape of a front sight and tape it on the barrel. keep trimming until you are on target now you have the right height. Then you can order a replacement sight. Good luck. Don't let the smith permanently alter the rifle. Dave

if you took it to the gunsmith, you should be very happy.
I am originaly from place when there are pelnty of Mosin Nagants and Mausers k98, ack from II WW.
My friend who is a gunsmith back in old country told me to file gently the rear iron sight to compensate for high shooting.
It is a very typical for Mosin to shoot high without the bayonet, also Mosin has very soft barrels, which could be good and bad.

You have try it sometime to really appreciate the difference the bayonet makes. It's not just the weight of the bayonet that affects the POI but the length of it. It acts as a lever on the end of the barrel and affects the harmonics.
