Apologies in advance for the cell phone pics. If you'd like to see a closer look at anything in particular, just ask.

Ordered my first M91/30 from Al Flaherty's without knowing much about these rifles. Payed $175, and was happy to receive a 1942 Izzy arsenal refurb with all matching serials in pretty decent nick. Stock is well worn, but no major dings or gouges.

Caught the Mosin Nagant bug while researching all the markings on it, and immediately wanted more. Good thing they're cheap!

Put in an order with Frontier for a 1929 ex-Dragoon, because I wanted a hex receiver. Payed about $230. Just got in today. It has all matching serials and seems in somewhat decent condition. The stock is banged up pretty bad, and the bolt has seen better days. The action looks great, and the bluing is very good. For some reason, it does not bear the arsenal refurb indicator anywhere. Did some of these rifles just head straight to the cosmo? I'll be cleaning and finishing up the de-cosmoing on this one soon.

Didn't intend to, but I picked up a Polish M44 from the Parry Sound gun show on Saturday. Payed $115, came without a bayonet. The rifle is in superb condition with matching serials, save for the bolt. That thing is a mess, clearly taken from another Mosin. It was forced matched, too... but not to this rifle. I've ordered the bayonet assembly from Ellwood Epps. Since the condition of the bolt so poorly compliments the rest of the rifle, I'm thinking I'll be polishing the bolt on this one.

This brings me to the real question. I'm thinking about how far is too far when messing with the condition of these rifles. I won't be going bubba on any of them. I'm thinking I'll leave the 1942 as it is (seeing as everything is looking good on it), refinish the stock and bolt on the 1929, and then go all-out with the M44 (glass bedding, polishing the bolt, trigger job perhaps)

I wonder what happened to the original M-44 bolt. A good polish would not hurt at all. Have you thought about checking the headspace ?

BTW, the pics look fine, I have seen much worse here.

Yea, pictures look pretty good. You're already 1 up on everyone else who post threads with out pictures. I polished the bolt carrier and bolt on a SKS that was pretty bad with Flitz and it all came off relatively easy.

I'm on the surplus rifle flu right now. Been buying a new surplus rifle every pay day. Good thing they're cheap.

It's a shame, but I'll make the best of it. Hopefully I can get the bolt polished today, I'll be sure to update the thread when finished. It'll be my first time polishing anything, so it should be interesting.... :D

"Okie" headspace gauges are on their way right now, and I'm pretty sure they can be used with the extractor left in, making my life easy. I'll report back on the results.

Nice Rifles, now you going to need SVT40

I really want an SVT40 and/or a Mosin PU sniper. One of these days, I'll cave. But presently my gun locker is chock-full, so reason and logic are getting in my way.

Liberty Tree Gun Parts would likely have been much cheaper.Harold

Did not know about that site, thanks for the info. If you are referring to the bayonet I ordered, I paid $25 at Epps, so in this case it was the cheaper route I suppose. Now I just have to pray it's the double-eared model or else I have a sharp paperweight on my hands

Headspace gauges got here today, all 3 rifles passed with flying colours.

Spent some time trying to bring the M44's bolt back from the brink, using a Scotch-Brite pad and some oil. Used a bit of "Mother's" polish on it with the dremel to see what it did.

The pitting is deep, so if I ever want a really fine finish I will have to spend a lot of quality time with the sandpaper. For now, though, it is much better, and looks a lot less conspicuous in the M44.

Lots of Chinese surplus ammo is on its way to me now, so I'll report back after I have some range time in with these.

Your lucky I bought mine from a site sponsor and it looks like its been drop out of a truck going 100 kph. I am waiting on a reply from the dealer. And il post pictures in the comming days.

@rally guy - saw the pics in your other thread. That stock has definitely seen better days. Refinishing it would be a good project! I want to refinish my 1929's stock

The M44's bayonet got here today, from Ellwood Epps. Looks to be in great condition, definitely pleased with it.
