So I wasn't looking for a new 10/22, but in early Feb. I found one for $189+ tax. I had plans for builing a stock so I posted an add in the EE for a Ruger stock, and I got one for $25 incl. shipping (thanks Beach Boy) I was expecting a stock that had seen some use but instead I recieved an almost cherry Brand new stock!
I decided to wait a bit and put the stock aside..... I just didn't feel "right" cutting into a stock that cherry..... That is when I found the "bargin" on the web site for a new plain jane 10/22.
So I mounted a scope, took it to the range and I was unimpressed with the groupings, 2 1/2" at 25 yrds from a rest is not that good in my opinion. So I put the gun in the cabinet and kept on shooting my First 10/22..... I did the stock on this guy abut 3 yrs ago and I am still surprised that ruger doesn't offer a stock like this in their 10/22 line.....
So with the intention of building a 10/22 that could at least keep up with my Savage MKII Heavy barrel (which I think is AWSOME) I decided to order some parts. The usuall suspects, bolt buffer, VQ extractor, extended mag release and a new bolt handle. I was still undecided about what or which barrrel to put on it. I am pretty much decided on a 16" but which brand...... I have seen the Butler Creek, Green Mountain and a few others in the past, I have even purchased a Butler creek installed it with a thumb hole stock on a 10/22, I sold it to fund something else...... I kept on coming back to my "dads" 10/22.... The one I customized 3 yrs ago when I started "storing" it for the old man. I just love the darn thing, its light, quick to the shoulder and this past weekend I took about 40ish gophers with it, from 35yrds all the way out to 130yrds (I know I paced it out)......
So I came home Saturday evening with an Idea.......... I have 2 bone stock stocks, I know I can shave the outside to make it all nice and tight..... why can't I trim out the inside too and put a heavy on it....... I want the Accuracy of a heavy but still light and manuverable enough to walk around in a pasture all day with out my arms cramping up on me.
I called a buddy who I know is selling a BC barrel, and 45 min and $140 bucks later I have a brand new 20" BC barrel in one hand and a Chisle in the other!!!! I will let the pictures tell the story from here......
So there it is...... The action is still bone stock, I have still not recieved any of the Parts I ordered, so I still have the factory trigger and what not in there, all of the Ruger crappiness..... I was breaking in the barrel this evening, and go figgure stovepipes, ftf & fte galore....... I now remeber why I spent the money on a VQ extractor on my other 10/22..... its funny but when u are breaking in a new firearm all of the memorys come flooding back.... remeber the BIT*H of a time you had trying to figgure out why this FRIGGIN thing keeps STOVE PIPING!!!!!! AHHHH the good old days....
So all in all I am impressed with this little bugger now, I could just about shoot it the way it is....... it is not as good as the MKII yet, but it is getting better....... take a look at these targets!
25yrds with a rest
25yrds Offhand
Well its actually closer to 20yrds but this is my story...... so deal with it!!!
So far I have about 10hrs into this project, and a cost of about $165 plus purchase. All I have to do now is the auto bolt release, Extractor, Trigger job, Bed the action, Match the bolt face......... wow I am not even close to being done yet...... The rest is all internal, so the "looks nice" part is done!!!!
Enjoy
