Guess?
I was hoping to have this rifle ready for my Moose hunt at the beginning of October, but it wasn't meant to be. All ready for deer. Quick sight in today as the light was failing and she is shooting about 2-2.5" at 100y. Will try again when I have some more time. Everything done is reversable!

Leopold QRW low rings
S&K M44 scout weaver rail
H-Lux LER scope
S&B SP ammo

This is my first scout setup and I am really pleased with the rifle. Great in the bush, and the optic is very clear.

That.... Looks awesome.

Ohh, what to do now... I have an M44 already... and and M38 on the way....

I've found the S&K rail available from a few sites in the US, anyone in Canada deal them? Does it seem like a solid mount?

I know Brownells carries them, but they didn't have the Weaver in stock. S&K seems to be a small "Mom and Pop" shop and have been great to deal with...go direct. Shipping is not cheap, but it is fast. I bought an No4 mount from them years ago too.

I put 20rds through the M44 the other day and nothing has moved. The M44 is a kicker! :)

Thanks! Found their site. Bookmarked it pending available funds.

Yup, the M44 kicks a bit, but darn fun to shoot. I'm thinking of this more for my (still in transit to my house) M38, which should be a little lighter and less front heavy without the bayonet. If it groups reasonably well, it stands a good chance of becoming next year's deer rifle build. Had good luck with this year's SKS deer rifle build, want to go with something different next year.

A "scout" type platform really intrigues me. And the ability to scout mount without altering the rifle is a key thing, for me, with old milsurps.

I took mine moose hunting last year (Brass Stacker M44 mount, cheap-o reddot I had laying around). It worked well but was a big of a pig when I was dogging all day with it on my shoulder. Would like to get my hands on an M38 and be rid of the excess weight of the bayo for that. Effective though and cheap when all was said and done.

I am not sure 10oz (bayo assembly weight aprox) would make that much of a difference to me, but I can see the need for a padded sling over the original.

How do you like the brass stacker?

The front end of the M44 is noticably heavier by a little bit with the weight of the bayo and it's corresponding mount.
Not so much though that would make it anymore tiresome to haul around than an M38.

Pics were taken on a buddies phone. This was my first big game and I am still jazzed about it. Went almost 5 days without seeing any sign, then Friday my camp took a doe, and I got the buck this morning.... Same exact hide for both.

You can piss the difference in power between a 7.62 x 54 and a 30-06 sprng which is a popular moose rifle.
Had a M44 a few years back that I installed a Timney trigger kit in and mounted a Leupold 3-9x40 using a home made mount.
Very accurate (about 1 1/2" 3-shot group @ 100 yds with dirt cheap factory Sellier + Bellot soft pointed ammo) for a milsurp field rifle but a little on the heavy side (I left the spike bayonet on the gun).
I sold the gun to a chap from North Bay about 3 years ago who killed a moose with it in Temagami that very fall.
