Well persistence paid off, i got a new buddy last night, she is 6 months old, pure bred lab father and pure bred beagle mother, that makes her a Beagador or a Labbe as some would say, house trained and crate trained, she loves to swim and fetch, last night i introduced her to the smell of mallard wings and she went nuts!!!Looking forward to next fall!!!!

On the furniture already! Ryan, your in so much trouble with that little one, ha ha ha. Sounds like your next fall will be adventure filled! Congrats!

Cheers
Jay

When i got her she was already house broke and crate trained, I am working on reinforcing the crate training part, im not really sure how big she will be, from all ive been ready , they saw, either a small lab or a big beagle, lol, roughly 40-50 pounds.

She is beautiful, a real looker. Go and get a few grouse wings and put them in Zip Loc bags in the freezer now so as you can start training her to "play" during the long and boring nights of the winter...or duck wings if they are easy to come across.

Another useful thing to do is to teach your girl to have a soft mouth. This'll stop her from mangling the birds. I did this by putting my hand in my puppies mouth all the time and letting him chew on it, but keeping on with "Gently" instructions all the time.

He is now 7 and has never bitten anyone and releases his grip on any toy when a hand comes close. Other people who know what they are doing will tell you better ways, but remember the end result you want any way.

I had a springer spaniel with a really hard mouth. He actually destroyed the first few birds that he retreived. I wraped partridge wings around a dowel with nails driven through it and played some fetch. We used that wing/nail dummy for a few days of training and then went out hunting again. The birds he retreived then had hardly a feather ruffled. Fixed him right up.
