A few months ago I came across a 6.5x284 that I just couldn't turn down. Once I got it home I quickly realized that a short action was not the platform for such a cartridge. I toyed with the idea of running it on 100gr ttsx's for hunting season but I just didn't want to. So after a few phone calls, a bit of cash and a little time everything came together to turn my unfired 6.5x284 into my ideal deer rifle.

I got in contact with Terry from Black Art Rifle Company and I was lucky enough to have him tell me he'd have my rifle done for deer season. The action that came on the gun had already been slabbed, bolt fluted and bolt handle skelentonized. Terry cleaned up the action and the Shilen barrel was unscrewed. A #4 Kreiger was chambered in 260 Rem, fluted, finished at 24" and put in its place. A Wyatts extended box mag was fitted and covered with a PTG hinged floorplate. The trigger had been tuned to a crisp 2 lbs previously and was left as is. The whole works was Arma-coated black and bedded into a Manners ultralight stock.

The Tally lightweights were lapped and a Nightforce 2.5-10x32 with a NPR-2 reticle was set on top. The whole package come in at 8.5lbs loaded with a sling. Not exactly a lightweight but I wasn't looking for one. She balances perfectly and handles the same. Can't wait to get it to the range. Hopefully load development goes quick and she can start putting meat in the freezer.

Range report to follow.

Thanks guys! If it shoots as good as it looks I'll be a happy man. Maybe I can ditch work early and throw a few rounds together today lol.

Well I got to tinkering over the last couple days and this is what I've come up with.

The gun shoots a hell of a lot better than I do. I think I'm gonna leave well enough alone and call this my load for hunting season. As a side note I was using the hunting vld's just forgot to write it on the target.

The sick thing is I'm already hoarding parts for my next Black Art build. I have now officially been ruined for factory rifles. Thanks again to Terry. I look forward to doing it again.

Is that the new NF 2.5-10x32 with zerostop ? ... " C455 " I ordered one , only god knows when its coming. Your looks horny , Now I cannot wait ! I want !

6.5 X 284 to .260 is splitting hairs...as much as I like .260, I would have left her "as is" and spent the money elsewhere... Looks very nice though... Good luck.

I would have left it but even with with the extended box mag the 140 gr bullets were still seated very deep. Wasting all that powder space seemed to negate the point of having the 6.5x284. Being as I have a 260 for target shooting it seemed like a natural choice. I'm happy with it

Ahhhh, double dipping... Makes sense. I just talked myself out of a Brennekke, when I looked at the mountain of dies on my reloading bench!

It's an older model. This one was made in 2011. I picked it up a few months ago and it was the last one in the store. I believe the new ones come with a power throw lever which would have been nice to have. You'll love the scope. It makes for a really nice, compact package. I was shooting until sun set last night and it was still very clear, even with the small objective.

Ya the new ones do have the throw lever ... hope I can get it before the end of September , for and extra ounce and a bit you can get a 42mm objective. Think ill probably stick with the 32

I wouldn't see the need for the 42 mm after looking through mine. That scope will let you see anything you need to if there's enough light to be shooting at it. The NPR2 is pretty nice in this application too. No too cluttered.
